Thumbs down God gives terrible advice

The bible is full of his bad advice, but it looks as if people are still listening to him regardless. Here are 2 recent pearls of wisdom that would have gotten Dear Abbey fired on the spot or possibly even put in jail if she made the following suggestions to people:

1.)God tells Adrea Yates to kill her kids right now before the devil has a chance to get them. She follows Gods instructions and is now in prison for the rest of her life.

2.)Jacques Robidoux and his wife (who lived just a couple miles from me) had a baby. God,being the expert on infant nutrition that he is,tells Robidoux`s sister that the baby should be fed nothing but the mothers breast milk and seek no medical help what so ever.
Jacques Robidoux follows this advice until his baby dies and he`s now in prison for the rest of his life.

I wonder how many of the Christians who come to this site have been told to do so by God. This would also be very bad advice.

The examples of bad advice are probably too numerous to list here, but whats the most terrible piece of advice God has ever given?

This undoubtably won't be the worst thing the obviously genocidal god entity was supposed to have done, but suggesting Peter Sutcliffe (AKA the Yorkshire Ripper) sort out the prostitution problem in a less-than-legal (or acceptable) fashion kinda gets my award.

But, let's face it, it was probably only the devil, pretending to be the g-man. The big g's all about lurve, ain't he? Or was that Barry White?

Remember the time when God told everybody to sit on it? And then everybody did! Oh man, was that funny. That crazy God.

Y'know, I am skeptical that either of those people was told to do those things by God. I think people tend to take their own desires and impose them on whatever their mode-of-decision is. Theists say "God told me". Rationalists say "this is the most rational choice". It's all the same.

FWIW, I'm not seeing how "hang out on II" is bad advice. I wouldn't say I was "told by God", directly, but it's certainly consistent with standing orders, and it's really fun!

I think this is the point that I'd quite like to see answered - if God does speak to people, how do we (as bystanders) know that it's God, and not some form of mental illness?

I obviously speak as an interested atheist here, but I'd love to know whether there are any guidelines for 'Deity-human communication verification'?

Just curious...

In the immortal words of the wise sage Madimus Kallious "God is Santa for adults".

This simple revelation is bad for the God-ites as it depletes their tithing ranks.

In short, it would be bad for business

FWIW

I have known dozens of people who claim to have heard god speak to them or hear a "small still voice". My question has been and will always be - If them, then why not me? Was it determinde from birth that I was not worthy of the god dude to speak to? Was it something I said? When I was in the church I tried to lieten real hard and wanted very badly for that small voice to tel me something, any goddamned thing. And guess what? Nada! To this day I do not hear voices or god talking to me or the holy spirit or any of that stuff. Guess I am doomed.
