It is worth pointing out that the usage Evangelion refers to was not current at the time the New Testament was written, but dates much earlier to the time of Herodotus (circa 440 BCE). On the other hand at the time the NT was written KOSMOS is generally regarded as equivalent to OIKOUMENE, meaning the "known or inhabited world", refering to all of the Graeco-Roman world including but not limited to Palestine. This is obviously mytho-poetic language not meant to be construed literally since even the relatively scientifically illiterate authors of the NT would have known there was no mountain so high in the region (or on earth for that matter) that one could see all of the Graeco-Roman world from it's summit. This does not change the fact that most first century Jews would have conceived of the earth as flat.

incidentally the definition Evangelion gave is somewhat confused since the LSJ doesn't say the word literally means "states", but rather it means (for this usage) "order" in relation to states
