Default Oi! My mother thinks....

that Iraq had a hand in the 9/11 terrioist attacks!

I can't believe it, I am still dumbfounded by it.

We were in the car, when I mentioned to her that Bush had given Iraq till tomorrow to disarm then she went off, heres a little parafrased excerpt...

Mom:...and all those anti-war protestors who say that Iraq hasent hurt us in twelve years, well those terrioist attacks caused a ripple effect with the air lines and...

Me: What?! The septemer 11th terriost atttacks were pepetrated by Islamic extremests, Iraq had nothing to do with it...

Mom: (weird sound sorta like Naawwww!) Well, he gases his own people....

Me: So what if he does? (not neccessarly admiting it here) That doesent mean he finances terroism!

Mom: Well your very nieve to think that.

The call fell silent.

Dont get me wrong, I love my mother very much but she buys into all of the goverment propoganda. When bush gave his state of the union adress she clapped at the parts about war and such. I guess I know when to keep my mouth shut.

Has anyone had experience like this?

Hmm, doesn't really fit in SL&S, so it's either MD or PD. I'll send it over the Misc. Discussion.

I got an earful of similar bullshit early last summer. I believe the specific subject was John Walker Lindh and whether or not he was a "traitor". Ever since grandma and grandpa moved from Rush Limbaugh to FoxNews to soothe their jones for closed-minded conservative smack I simply don't discuss politics with them. I'm just glad they're taking their nap when 700 Club is on.

Don't believe the pushers when they say a little hit of Rush is harmless, I guess.

I have a hard time with the concept of traitors. Doing it for money is one thing, but doing it for ideaological reasons gives me pause. I mean, this country was founded by a bunch of British traitors. If Lindh moved to Afghanistan because he felt that was where he belonged, and then wanted to support his new nation, I have a hard time calling him a traitor. I don't have a hard time calling a stupid fucked-up religious zealot and a waste of human space if that's the kind of sick regime he favors, I just have a hard time calling him a traitor.

If we go to war with another nation, are the former citizens of that nation living here traitors to their nation if they support us in that war? It seems like a bit of a grey area. I'm not trying to be argumentative (or highjack the thread), it's just an area on which I have a little trouble standing on solid ground.

Regarding Saddam gassing his own people:

That was back in the 80s. You know, when Reagan/Bush were busily supporting him.

Doesn't that make them accomplices? Shouldn't we therefore bomb the hell out of them too?

My dad hasn't spoken to me in two weeks. I made the mistake of telling him that I was against waging war on Iraq. If I had made my GW Bush opinions public, he'd probably disown me.

As we are thrown off balance with news of attacks, the war mongers will try to conflate the war on terror and the Iraq war.
Bring it up in casual conversation wherever you may be. Make a point about how the two are causally unconnected. It's important that people see that we are still being lied to regarding the "justifications" for this war.
