It probably was in bad taste to speak to a kid in that way when my real gripe is with the adults that indonctrinated the kid. However, I didn't cuss or insult her directly so I don't think I was really that rude. Additionally, I saw what church she was representing and know that it is standard practice in that church's missions to gather up village children for meals and preach the gospel as part of the mission. I consider that subversion of those children's parents. Maybe my hostility was mis-directed. Hopefully it caused the girl to think about the true goal of her church's evangelizing.

Wow, taking on the family is a little braver than taking pot shots at strangers. Good luck at resolving things with the wife.

The Other Michael:

Since that personal event, 9-11 and the recent offensive governmental treatment of non-believers, I admittedly have become more assertive in my behavior and engage more often in confrontational debate when the topic or certain ritualistic behavior arise.

Needless to say, this has not encouraged any entreaties for common ground.

Of course, in any relationship, there are significant number of other dynamics at play that don't seem to be alleviating any pressure.

The SIL and her family return at the end of this month for about three days (and nights) on their way to a wedding in FL. They have been put on notice regarding my requests to abstain from any opportunities to proseletyze or ritualize in my humble abode.

We will see how it works out.

Many thanks to you and scombrid for the concern.

It means a lot to me.

BTW seebs has shown, in exemplary fashion, how atheists are viewed automatically as assholes for merely encouraging rational thought over superstition.

Yet, the superstitious seem to be viewed as having the innate ability to spew all sorts of nonsensical blatherings like maniacs carte blanche.

How the smell of all the burning martyrs must please the Great Creator.

Hi Panta Pei (I almost wrote "Pants!" but restrained myself - it must be some strange meme floating about),

Is there any chance you could put them up in a nearby motel, and only see them on neutral ground?

At least then you can maybe justify to yourself letting things slide when they blather on, since they aren't affronting you in your own home.

I do see a problem of that being perceived by your spouse as inhospitable behaviour, but perhaps you can couch the idea as your attempt to reduce the chances of a run in thereby forestalling any escalation in the situation.

best of luck,
Michael
