I expect he/she is addressing the question to the few theists who hang out here.

Shadownought:
Why do I need a god?

Kass:
Like most of those who've already answered this question, I'd say you don't need one. If you want one, go for it. If you don't, don't bother.

Shadow:
Can any of the theists on the board tell me why humans need a god?

Kass:
I wouldn't say humans need any Gods. I'd say they want them for various reasons which I dare say you already know.

Shadow:
Why do you believe in one,

Kass:
Because it's more fun than not believing in one.

Shadow:
and why would humans be better off worshipping something which we have no indication even exists?

Kass:
You're assuming I think humans would be better off worshipping Gods here. I don't necessarily think it's a question of better off at all, so I'd say I can't give you an answer to this other than "I don't think they are."

Shadow:
Why should humans believe in and worship a god?

Kass:
Why not? It's fun, it's easy, and it's no worse than many other hobbies or enjoyments people have, like fishing or playing the piano. (And don't give me the argument that God belief makes human beings into criminals, please...most people with God beliefs aren't criminals.)

My point is still the same...Kassiana.

It is not the right forum. Have you ever seen an Atheist question posted on your Church (even if there happen to be an atheists visiting)?

AGain...why should you post a question for theist only?

Why, on earth, should you bar other people?

Why the exclusivity, the elitism?

This is a freethinker page! *For God Sakes!*

since i'm already piqued... I'm just going to say it one more time. Please <img src="graemlins/boohoo.gif" border="0" alt="[Boo Hoo]" /> don't address your post to an exclusive number of people-- who are just passing-by, by the way.

Shadownought:

I think you're questions make assumptions about the theist perspective that are incorrect.

From the theist perspective, God DOES exist. In that context, the question "Why do humans need a God?" makes no sense. From their perspective, humans HAVE a God. It's just a fact. The reason to worship God is because he created everything, does good works, offerse eternal reward, etc.

From the perspective of most theists, there are indications that God exists. Those of us on this side of the fence would strongly disagree, but that's the way most theists feel.

The more interesting questions to ask theists are "Why do you believe God is real?" Unfortunately, in my opinion, the truth of the matter is most theists believe because they have been conditioned to from birth. It's almost instinctive and intuitive, not a reasoned choice made by an adult weighing the options.

*choke* Oh, come on!

Any atheist is free to answer, obviously. But the question IS NOT AIMED AT THEM. I imagine most of them share the same ideas I have about why people believe in gods. I am NOT trying to ban atheists from answering the question; I am not as stupid as you seem to think.

Interesting answers all; I like what someone said about how all humans do not feel the need to worship a god, while others do.

Yes, I know. I suppose you have a point, though- a theist may simply say "You should believe in God because he exists."

I guess part of what I was asking is also what you said: "Why do you believe God is real?" Though that's not all of what I want. I suppose I also wanted to see some of the possible arguments offered for why OTHER people besides the believer should believe as well. Some theists say you should believe in their god, but they never really think about giving a reason.

I did not intend for this thread to be insulting, exclusionary, elitist, or whatever else I've been accused of. If this is the impression I'm giving, then this thread is better off being deleted.
