I have never understood why creationists are so afraid of evolution being taught in school, because I encounter people almost every day that convince me it certainly isn't being learned.

Similarly, I've always wondered about why they think posting the Ten Commandments in schools is going to change anything. The kids don''t pay any attention to anything else posted on the walls (assuming they can read, of course).

This is one that always gets my knickers in a twist. Of course, canucks and mexicans ARE american simply because they reside on the continent of North America. That in no other way equates them with the yankee meat in their sandwich.

I cannot speak on behalf of any Mexicans, but I don't know any canucks (myself included) that aren't *seriously* offended by being equated with our southern neighbours.

Just move to Quebec instead. Not only will you be a fucking anglo, you'll be a bloody yank to boot. Everyone will hate you, but it's a lot closer to you than France.
Canadian anglos sometimes get special treatment when they cannot speak any french (with some reason, perhaps...), but I have found that americans are given a little more slack (and are therefore treated just as rudely as everyone else).

The first thing they get wrong is saying evolution is a theory, not fact.
Theory by definition IS fact, or based on facts. We know evolution occurred, it's just not known exactly how it occurred.
One other thing people get wrong is saying we evolved from apes.
Humans and apes both evolved from a common ancestor.

I often mention Mexicans, Brazilians, Canadians, Argentinians, Columbians, etc, when someone just says "American".

About this "American" business, some of you buttmunches need to recognize the fact that words (surprise!) can have more than one meaning. When I go to Merriam-Webster and look up "American", I find:

1 : an American Indian of No. America or So. America
2 : a native or inhabitant of No. America or So. America
3 : a citizen of the U.S.
4 : AMERICAN ENGLISH

If you want to convince the world to stop calling U.S. citizens "Americans" and start calling them "Usanians" or "Statesniks", be my guest. Until then, you have to cope with the fact that everyone else uses a word in a way that makes you sad.

Now, about the original question, I've found a professor Brian Alters who is doing research on creationist ignorance. You can search Google on this. The guy has an article in the journal Evolution. Here's the abstract. From a newspaper article:

Quote:
Together with University of Southern California educational psychologist William B. Michael, Alters recently surveyed or interviewed 1,200 first-year students at 10 different American colleges. They discovered that among the students who disbelieved in evolution, about 45% maintained specific misconceptions about what evolutionary science is all about.
I find 45% too low to believe.

Evolution is both a fact and a theory. The fact of evolution is that life changes. The theory of evolution explains this fact.

No, humans did evolve from apes. In fact, humans are apes. Humans just didn't evolve from any of the other extant species of apes.
