Why? Everyone else was doing it. I just wanted to be popular.

Default Boredom

I have gone away and come back to visiting Infidels a couple of times with the periods of time being in the months(for staying away) since '01. Perhaps this is why my old "number of posts" (about 1000) has gone down on one of those occasions the board was being revamped and I was on II vacation. It's kind of interesting because upon returns I often see a whole new brand of regular posters with few of the old that remain. So I see a certain transience of "faces" here although many of the philosophical arguments tend to follow the same lines. I do remember Helen though back from the "screwloose" days on the Philo board, good to see you remaining steady here...

I suppose the main reason is that this board offers a place for me to get away from the herd I have to deal with in real life. It's very difficult for me to watch the people closest to me spend so much time concerning themselves about an ancient belief system, and then quickly disregarding anything which might contradict their beliefs without so much as a thought.

I second that. What I find extremely frustrating (as well as disheartening when I think of the desperation called for the type of thinking) that it takes when those I know must align conventional knowledge and information to reconcile with the Bible...as if it were beyond reproach as well as a highly credible source. That makes any discussion difficult when you point out how many tenets in their beliefs are based on more ancient religions...

Why? Religion is interesting. I don't buy it, but that doesn't mean I can't learn from it. Additionally, I live in an area where atheists are very few and far between (open atheists, anyway), so discussing some of these issues IRL would get me little more but prayer offers and/or condemnation.

Thanks, xoc

Fwiw, there was some discussion yesterday about why post counts might have decreased over time, in this thread.

More than one of the above, which one depends on the day, my mood, recent dealings with supernaturalists (my aunt just tried to sell me on "Crossing Over" and John Edward's accuracy, I told her to go on the show and have him get the safe combination from my recently deceased grandmother (aunt's M-I-L)), and other such stuff.
