It used to be . I would like to think I was instrumental in changing that.
I received a lot of flak when I refused to go, and since the dispute was religious in nature, we had to be mediated by the chaplain (irony). It was eventually decided that I was not disobeying a lawful order, and I did not have to go to chapel on Sunday mornings. I did, however, get to remain behind and scrub the squad bay floors every week... I was told that it was not in punishment, only that recruits are not allowed to be idle at any time. This did hold to be true in all other situations, but the method of keeping me occupied seemed more reciprical than other methods.
But, the DI that I defied got to keep me occupied, so I suppose it was more for wounding his pride than my religious defiance.
An order came down from the base commander soon afterward stressing that chapel was optional. It was worded as if that were already true, and that the rule had been forgotten. This may be so, I have not researched it. That was Nov of 1989.
