It (the bible) is the greatest achievement of the West, and it clearly shows that Western culture is the best culture.
The greatest achievement of the West is plumbing and effective sewerage which has doubled the life expectancy of we humans.
The bible is from the primitive Middle East which is why god is portrayed as some kind of Sultan and women as less than human.

Biff, I got the sense that emotional wasn't referring to the bible in that statement, but instead to mike's statement "We have been whittling away at the caste system, the notion of royalty. We are rejecting the notion that one person deserves status just for being born to a royal family."

Oh, sorry. Misread that.

The entire concept of "the individual" is unique to the West and it was even lost here during the middle ages. Now it seems so completely natural that we can't even comprehend the mind set of Middle Eastern and Asian suicide bombers who don't share it.

The Islamic world is backward, medieval, primitive. The Islamic world really is a helpless baby that needs the helping hand of the West in order to grow to maturity. That's not colonialism, that's simply the blessed certainty about the rightfulness of the Western way.
I'm assuming you're being sarcastic. I really don't care to address Middle East politics at this point in time.

has anyone else noticed that magus has gained such a reputation that "magusesque", and "pulling a magus", or the mere mention of a bad argument automatically gets his namesake?...has anyone else noticed how funny this is? Even funnier, is that almost everyone recognizes the use of the name for it's accepted definition(read: really, really ignorant statement with no support and worse presentation)? It just struck me as odd, that along with the IPU, magus's nick will in time be immortalized, and it's utterance will be right up there with "LUSER", and "HAXOR" and other funnies.

Biff,

Yes, I was referring to the Western achievements of democracy, equality before the law, and human rights.

Mike,

I wasn't being sarcastic. I really do believe the West is a cut above those Middle-Eastern monotheistic cultures, whether it is based on the Bible or on the Qur'an. The irenic attitude that many secular humanists display towards those primitive theisms is simply disgraceful. "This book is not meant as an attack on Islamic beliefs, I respect Islam..." - damnit, just tell the truth instead of fudging about! Judaism, Christianity and Islam are worthy of attack!

I noticed this too. I think magus55 has to be a sock-puppet for someone else around here (an atheist), but I haven't figured out who yet. Anyone going to own up?

An interesting position! But I don't know, I've seen these baptists in real life(My bad....I know that's not what he calls himself, but that is what I see), and they are just like that. If it's a sockpuppet, the guy has to be having headaches from the maitenance required to endure what is essentially a god sized tumour in one's brain. Just seems to difficult a task. Migraine city!

C'mon, guys, Magus is a Sockpuppet for God. Or at least he appears to consider himself one.

That sounds like one of those "many truths" I've heard so much about, that are said in jest
