Not sure if this is rude or considerate (I didn't want to clog up the forum with a new thread, but this is ranterjmc's), but hey ho. I'm also a British atheist new to these boards.

Brought up more or less agnostic (parents C of E, which is the most apathetic Christian sect I've ever encountered), never baptised or anything. Went to Catholic school (laughing uncontrollably at my theology teacher's assertion that it was vital to the working of the Eucharist that it be unutterably tedious). Now I'm studying physics and computing at uni.

So hello all, and (as it is his thread) especially to ranterjmc.

A veritable flood of Brits, I don't know about meetings maybe we should be setting up a whole II sub group.

Greetings to both of you.

Cool Brit Atheists

I find it fascinating the contrasts in the scene is between the US and UK.

The UK has an "established" church with the Queen as its head so you'd think religion was everywhere but apathy rules OK. "C of E" is somethingfor the hard of thinking to put on hospital admission forms. I should think about 60% at least of the UK populace haven't the foggiest what xtianity is all about and don't care.

The US is supposed to have a ban on establishment of religion yet religion is far more pervasive or has seemed so to me on my visits.

Creationism (a hobby-horse of mine) only raises its ugly head now and again in the UK like a year ago when a millionairre used-car salesman but big fundy pal of Tony's founded some schools.

Yet we seem to have the most fundy xtian President in GWB at the same time as the most fundy xtian ever Prime Minister in Tony Blair.

Personally I hope that the issue of the Weapons of Mass Non-existence will relieve us of one if not both but I suspect it is a bit forlorn.
