I know, but does that mean a humanitarian is a vegatable that really cares?

Vegans might also like to consider the following future history:
Quote:
From the Human Times 4/1/2222<strong>
An emergency meeting of the animal lovers council was held today at the Universal Court of the Rights of Things. Those who founded the movement hundreds of years ago are surely turning in their graves. Given the success of the vegan movement and advances in making fungus taste like 'Sausage Toulouse' the demand for dead animal parts is zero apart from some carnivorous cannibal-like cults.

With a plentiful supply of food, the human population has continued to expand placing unprecedented pressure on grazing land and other animal habitats. As a consequence and with virtual reality zoos, there exist only two live specimens of each animal left on earth with available gene bank technology to replace failed animals.

To correct this situation, the human interlocutors at the Universal Court of the Rights of Things have succesfully made the case that the eating of non-animals is borne of unnatural prejudice against warm and cold blooded beings. The winning argument made was that there be no discrimination made based on genus, sex or intelligence; the right to be eaten was paramount.

To ensure biodiversity henceforth, a system of quotas is being devised called "Meat and Two Veg" that will ensure the repopulation of the planet earth with animals. When asked about the ruling, Larry the Lamb commented "Lettuces, eat your hearts out" and Julienne Carrot responded "This is like, out of the frying pan into the fire, I'm just about to top myself."

Utopia? No such animal.

Well, you are right on that JP. Still I wonder if our vegetarian friends have a clue as to how to get us to where they want us to go. Sometimes the simple questions are the ones that have the most complex answers, if they have an answer at all. I suspect these people have no answer to this question, and therefore all their moral posturing about the evils of eating meat, is just so much tilting at windmills.

Utopia means "nowhere."

And spelled backwards, with the w and h switched, it looks like Erewhon.

I don't particularly see why a utopia would have to be vegetarian. It's just the dream of a 'perfect society.' And what's that?

Aldous Huxley's utopia took away natural reproduction to establish it... George Orwell's took away reason... and Burgess's took away choice. But this is new -- I never heard of one taking away our beef.

Well, creating synthetic meat that cost less than real meat would probably work. It would take care of everything except fishing and hunting.

Probably. It would be odd of someone to choose real meat over synthetic meat if it were identical and cheaper. Well, I suppose they could actually enjoy the death of an animal, but I don't think that's going to be true of that many people.

But, that's just me.

It's not that a utopia would have to be vegetarian, it's a vegetarian utopia - a world where no one eats meat.

Presumably we’re also not allowed to harm animals in any way. Need to find a good leather substitute amongst other things.

Are we allowed to eat meat if the animal has died of old age ? (not that I’m a great fan of mutton.)

In fact, we used to have a food outlet near work called “The Roadkill Grill”. So when I notice the occasional kangaroo “sleeping” alongside Cooper Street, can I morally chow down on a Skippy Burger for lunch ?

You'd be shot long before that. Hypothetically, of course.
