Default Please sign Amnesty petition against death by stoning

I expect most people here know that Amina Lawal has been condemned under Shari'a law in Nigeria to death by stoning for extramarital sex (often misreported in the press as "adultery"). Her case will come for appeal at the beginning of June. Her "crime" was confirmed by her giving birth to a daughter. The father simply denied everything and therefore got off. Apparently the Shari'a doesn't take cognizance of DNA testing.

The Spanish branch of Amnesty International has an e-petition against this ghastly sentence at this site. Please take a moment to add your name to those of the more than 2 million people who have signed this petition.

It is in Spanish. Here's what you do:
  1. type your first name in the box marked "nombre";
  2. type your surname in the box marked "apellidos";
  3. type your state, province or region in the box marked "provincia";
  4. look for your country in the drop-down list marked "país" and select it (you ought to be able to recognise the name -- e.g. "Estados Unidos"=USA, "Reino Unido"=UK, "Otros paises"=other countries);
  5. click on "SEGUIR" to go to the second page;
  6. (optional) enter your email address;
  7. click on "ACEPTAR" to register your signature.

Thanks for your support

Thumbs up Sharia is an abomination...

More than happy to sign my name to any petition that in any way opposes Sharia and the abominable disregard for human rights in the states that seek to enforce it...

Thanks for the link!

Signed as well.

One chance she has to get off is to survive the actual stoning. I think its interpreted as divine intervention if she manages to escape.

how 12th century is this ?

She's pregnant. Obviously he got off.

OK, in all seriousness...

Just curious, but why does signing this petition mean? Honestly. Will it matter to Nigeria? I really doubt it. It's not like policy will change because a bunch of people signed an Internet petition.

Serious question. Why bother?

(btw, I feel very strongly about the issue of her being stoned as well, I'm just curious of the motives behind a petition)

I don't like to rain on this parade. I am deeply sympathetic to the cause, but am afraid that the petition has little realistic hope of success.

Read the snopes article on this sad case for more information. And you might also want to read the snopes page on internet petitions.

Here is an Amnesty International site that gives more information.

I read the Amnesty International Page and understand that this woman is now in hiding pending her second appeal. Is there no way for her to escape to the South and then out of Nigeria? She could easily get political asylum abroad. One would think that there are enough people willing to sponser the money to get her out. This is indeed a despicable example of the extremes of religious beliefs. (not that all religious beliefs should be so condemned)

Me too. Despite the Snopes page on e-petitions (which makes a strong case).

Done.

This has to be at least as effective as prayer, right?

Too true. I don't delude myself with any realistic hope of success. Signing is for me; it's a small way of venting feckless outrage. It's also somewhat cathartic to know that others share your feelings of despair over such atrocities...

Many of us wonder how great wealth might change our lives ("what would I do if I were Bill Gates..."). I know one thing I would like to do: raise a mercenary army and rescue this woman and any other poor unfortunates condemned under such inhumane and abhorrent laws..

Regards,

Bill Snedden
