Actually, no. These are considered political contributions, so they're not tax-deductible.

It's still worth it, though.

As to the story, I can't even think of anything coherent to say, except that I'd love to see everyone who participated or stood by and let it happen suffer greatly for it.

Poor kid.

Of course that is not what I am saying. I'm saying. "your region of the country is as bad as my region of the country."

My region of the country is the same as your region of the country and IMO you are, in a word, wrong.

It happens in the illiterate, bigoted states of the North West.

Yeah, but there ain't so many of'em so proud of it that they claim it's their "Heritage".

Why should where? this takes place not be an important part of this topic? We often draw demographic references to such judicial/political cases... I suggest that the entire debate over the same type of fundy arrogance regarding Judge Moore would change were he in the Northwest, for example.

Rather than silence the issue, maybe someone can offer some guidance as to the truth... I can handle the truth... can Rufus?

Altho AIF specified AL, MS and GA, while I would tend to more generally specify "The South", I would be interested in the truth of this matter. And just to be clear, I am only saying that I would not be surprised to learn that AIF (or myself) is right, regarding these kinds of cases but there are possibly too many variables preventing us from any real truth.

. . .
I think that they are deductible. Check with each organization to be sure that it is a 501(3)(c) type. As long as they do not campaign for a particular political candidate and follow other IRS rules, they maintain their exempt status.

In the west, unless you are spanish speaking or native american, you probably don't have a heritage. You can't compare people whose families have been in the same county for ten generations with ones whose families have never stayed in the same spot for even a generation.

Because it allows people to become ignorant about what is happening in their own backyard. The sterotype that bigotry and ignorance is only a Southern Phenomenon is what allows White Supremacy movements to opperate so successfully in the Mid West and beyond.

Nope. Spend time on BaptistBoard and similar websites. You'll see that fundies from around the nation buy his arguements.

On the ACLU:

http://www.aclu.org/supportaclu/supp...list.cfm?c=202

Quote:
Gifts to the ACLU Foundation are fully tax-deductible to the donor; membership dues and gifts to the ACLU are not tax-deductible.

This is because the ACLU engages in substantial legislative lobbying, which cannot by law, be supported by tax-deductible funds. The ACLU Foundation, on the other hand, conducts our litigation and communications efforts, and contributions to it are tax-deductible.
Americans United:

http://www.au.org/development.htm

Quote:
Americans United is a non-profit, tax-exempt organization, designated by the IRS as 501(c)(3). For your tax purposes, the value of a subscription to Church & State magazine is $18.00. The remainder of your membership dues and any additional contributions within a year is fully tax-deductible.
Freedom From Religion Foundation

http://www.ffrf.org/member.html

Quote:
FFRF, Inc. is a non-profit 501(c)(3) educational organization. Dues/donations are tax deductible for income-tax purposes.
And, of course, the Internet Infidels is a 501(c)(3) organization.

Toto,

Thanks! I love that I was wrong on that. I was just vaguely remembering that my ACLU membership wasn't tax deductible (and was being too lazy to look it up).

I need to trick you into researching stuff more often. You're much better at it than I am, anyway.

I just tried the link and the story seems to have been removed. I also did a search on the site and the only thing that came up were the response letters. That really sucks because I was going to use this story as a reference for my Sociology essay.

Dues to the ACLU are NOT tax-deductible. Donations to the ACLU Foundation are. (Which is why they set up the foundation.)

So send in the minimum dues amount and make a generous gift to the foundation, if you have tax considerations.
