Sighswolf,

The woman is a member of the Church of Christ. They call their leaders 'elders' and call each other 'brother' and 'sister.'

Quote:
I am not at all surprised by the writer's problems at home with her husband.
I am not either. I fear to pressume as to the actual reason for the problems, but I know if I was married and my spouse started acting all 'wacked out on Christ' our marriage might start to have some problems too, when I started telling them to wake the fuck up.

Quote:
She also makes reference to the "prayers of the Saints".
All members of the Church of Christ can be refered to as saints, as they believe all Christians are saints.

Quote:
All of the above language is consistant with LDS indoctrination.
Well you got the indoctrination part right, no doubt about it.

Quote:
Mormons refer to priesthood holders as "Elders". Being the church of Latter Day Saints, the vernacular of "prayers of the Saints" would indicate that she is requesting the members (or the saints)to intercede on her behalf through prayer.
She is asking members of the church to pray for her, to Jesus, so that he will intercede for her.

Quote:
It does not matter if one partner is LDS and the other is Presbyterian for example either, religion is not just "religion" for the LDS.
Same for the Church of Christ, or at least the brand I was raised in.

Quote:
LDS doctrine is based on the belief that the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints is the only true church representing gods kingdom and power re-established on this earth. They believe they have the only direct line to god, through the living prophet of the church.
The church of Christ teaches that they are the only Christians, the only ones who have access to god, and even if she was a more liberal CoC member, her husband is not a believer of ANY stripe so in her eyes, he is the same amount of infidel that we are.

Quote:
She states that her letter was read in the service and that there was clapping from the members and she "wasnt sure that was allowed".
Her questioning here would indicate a new surrounding for her that she did not as yet fully
understand and was not sure of the acceptable conduct.
The conservative churches of Christ don't allow instruments or clapping because there is only authorization in the bible to sing in service to express joy. Clapping is usually looked askance upon and even forbidden using various reasons, one being that it is a sign of the world. She apparently went to a church who had left these beliefs, in part, behind.

I happen to know that this woman was raised in the church of Christ and had just profoundly re-dededicated her life to God and the church.

Hope this clears it up.

Personally, I think most of your observations still stand.

Talulah

sighhswolf,

Having also been raised in the CoC, I concur with Talulah. It's uncanny how very similar the two are.

Thanks for the education. And I think most of your observations stand.

Regarding the practice of calling fellow Christians "brother" or "sister", I think the Seventh-Day Adventists do this too.

Damn! Thank you, Wolf, for that insight. I was also raised in the conservative version of the Church of Christ. How funny that they are so similar to the LDS, yet in many CoC circles the LDS ranks third in the unwritten heirarchy of "people going to Hell:"

1.) Unbelievers
2.) Catholics
3.) LDS

Or at least it seemed to me by the attitudes displayed toward different groups.

I have to point out, though, to those who may not know that there is a rather large movement slinking through the Churches of Christ, at least in the Bible Belt. Many, many churches (including my parents') are splitting - the hardcore fundies that diana, Talulah, and I grew up with are separating from the more liberal members, and vice versa. It's really kind of pitiable.

Oops, sorry to veer off-topic!

Didn't she (the subject of this thread) say also in other posts how she used to be deeply involved in the occult? She very much believes in demons, angels, and spiritual warfare. I can't help but think that this would irritate her unbelieving husband, as well.

Yikes. I'm so glad I'm not in that mindset anymore. This thread is giving me flashbacks! But it's becoming therapeutic for me.

I still haven't decided if I should post in that thread or not.

I posted them at II a few days after she posted them on the board.

I was just struck by the irrational tone of them.

Terrecotta,

I have noticed this as well. Contrary to some people's beliefs, I believe that this movement will just create more staunch believers of the conservative manner and tip some over to the other side. Reactionairy tactics is something the CoC is good at. In any event, there has been much preaching about 'change agents' since the early 90's and earlier I am sure. The reactionairies get further and further out there. Imagine, all this from a group who wanted all churches to mesh together and follow only the bible, we have splintering after splintering after splintering of the 'one true church'.

Excuse me while I hurl.

Yes Terracotta I have seen the in JW's as well.
It would seem that a new brand of "zealot" is being spawned from the twisted remains of the old ones.
Some of the old doctrine is being questioned by
newer and younger members and labeled immaterial and irrelavent to the straight worship of god.
