I support the kid for two reasons.

1. He has the right to free expression. I assume he is indeed a pawn of his parents, but that is quite irrelevant. Free speech is not abridged simply because intelligent people can see he is a pawn.

2. The media savvy of children works in our favor. I assume this is typical Christian propaganda, with abyssmal production standards. That does not cut it with the PlayStation2 generation.

Hey, I wonder how this would differ if it was holocaust-denying tapes being passed out to Jewish children.

Next thing you know, Muslim children will want to pass out tapes extolling the virtues of Islam, the Hindu children will be giving out tapes extolling the virtues of Vishnu...etc, etc.

Just my opinion, but I think religion should be kept a seperate issue from public school, especially during the "impressionable" years of grade and middle school. I have no problem with high school voluntary selection of religious studies. If I want my young children to know about religion I'll send them to Sunday school or a private religious institution. Otherwise, I prefer the religious keep their dogma to themselves.

I presume this would be okay since it comports with what is actually taught in schools. However, a couple of months ago, my 3rd grade daughter's class was studying the Universe, so I had her take in a harmless, Smithsonian Institution video I purchased in '97, called "The Cosmic Connection" (I think). Anyway, it's an excellent video that basically talks about the origin of the Universe and the immenseness of it. The camera eye begins in a plaza in Venice, Italy, and then zooms out in powers of 10. It gives the kids a sense of how immense the Cosmos is....really a nice video. It then zooms back in and goes into a raindrop and on down to the sub-atomic level....cool stuff. But what I really got a kick out of later, was that my daughter told me that the teacher had pre-empted the video by explaining that this was just one of many theories regarding the universe.

And as far as I know, she's not a fundie or anything, so I was wondering if teachers (especially in the bible belt) were just being prompted to say something like this before they teach the standardized public school curriculum??
