Default Trenchcoat help

Uh, it's an odd question, but I have no idea about clothing sizes. I am interested in a US army trenchcoat that has a size label of 44L.

What does this mean in terms of chest, arm and overall length?

That looks like it would be a 44" chest with L(ong) sleaves. I have an old, grey marine trenchcoat (sans belt, belt loops and epaulettes) with those dimensions in my closet and it goes down to just past my knee. I'm 6'4", if that helps. It's a great coat that's lasted for years.

Are you shopping eBay? If the coat is more than 20 years old you want to be careful--sizes marked on vintage clothes can differ from modern standards and often fit smaller. I'd request the exact fabric measurements from the seller--chest circumference, sleeve length, shoulder-to hem length. Allow several inches of "ease" in the chest measurement compared to your body--you don't want it skin-tight, it has to fit over your clothes and let you move.

If the coat is pretty recently made, completely disregard the above, this site and a tape measure should do the trick:coat sizing (if you don't have a tape measure use a cord or piece of string, mark the distance, and measure it with a ruler.)
