You might also take a look at REACH. They are a secular version of Habitat for Humanity. They do house painting and yard cleanups. The Paint-a-thon is a blast, well organized and plenty of food. Portland Humanists also get involved in REACH.

Have fun.

Wow. Fellow Oregonians!

I lived in Eugene from '76 to '84 (graduated from South Eugene High). What a weird trip. Total fucking bubble.

Sorry, I know this has nothing to with the OP, but a trip down memory lane community college and all . (no, I didn't attend it, just played a lot of soccer there). Good ol' "last chance college"

If all goes according to plan I'll be moving to Eugene next fall to attend UO. I visited twice and really loved it there. Only problem is that there's some kind of Christian college right across from the campus!

But hopefully they're liberal Christians. I can't imagine that too many fundies live in or near Eugene.

Looks like it's this one:

Northwest Christian College

Quote:
Mission: Northwest Christian College exists to serve Christ, the church, and the community—locally and globally—by providing opportunities for higher education in Biblical studies, arts and sciences, and selected professions.

Background: Founded in 1895 and affiliated with the Christian Church (Disciples of Christ) and Christian Churches/Churches of Christ
apparently not too liberal

Oregon Christian College Focus of Gay Protest

Quote:
The Northwest Christian College requires students to sign a code of conduct that lists gay and lesbian behavior as unacceptable. In 1998, a Christian lesbian was denied admission for refusing to sign the code.

Gary LeClair, a Eugene gynecologist who holds a master's degree in marriage and family therapy from NCC, said the code and the skills needed to counsel gay youth are at cross-purposes. "Some student could think, 'I'm gay what do I do?,' and the first person they encounter is a school counselor," LeClair told the news agency. "Such a person really needs to be as values-free as possible."

. . .

A similar dispute threatened but did not derail the college's effort to win state accreditation for its graduate program in marriage and family therapy. The college last year, however, dropped its marriage and family therapy program, citing declining enrollment.

. . .

Womack condemned the effort to challenge the school's program. He said the college has never received a complaint from a current or former student alleging discrimination based on sexual orientation. "I'd feel terrible if people felt that gay and lesbian students at our college were being harassed, because they're not," he said. "To characterize us as intentionally training bigots is not a fair characterization at all."

They're raging fundies actually. Church of Christ is one of the Pentecostal denominations. Ashcroft's crowd.

But it's Eugene. The University of California at Eugene. The Berkeley of the northwest. Everybody pretty much ignores them. Or rather they get drowned out by the socialist/GLBT/freethought/college/other crowd.
