When I was in college I was registering to vote, and the table where the registration cards was set up had a bunch of bibles on it. At the bottom of the registration card was written something like, "Now place your left hand on the bible, and swear the following oath."

I told the guy I wouldn't swear an oath on the bible. Naturally, he asked why, and I told him I'm an atheist. The student filling out his card next to me exclaimed, 'You're an atheist? Doesn't that mean you can't vote?" :banghead: Honestly. And this guy was supposedly college-educated too.

This happened in North Carolina BTW, around 1987.

I was in a rural courthouse today and saw the judge give the following oath to the witness:

"Do you swear or affirm to tell the truth, the whole truth and nothing but the truth?"

Witness: "I Do"

No god, no bible, nobody had to make a special request not to swear. Even here in rural Alabama. Maybe we're just more enlightened than other parts of the country.

I worked in the Harris County Courts (Federal, State District, County & JP) in Houston from 1977 to 1994. We're the death penalty capital of the US and the allegedly civilized world -- Harris County, Texas.

The judges say "Do you solemnly swear, or affirm" like the last poster who is in Alabama, with "So help you God" on the end.

Nobody whips out a bible. I administered oaths as an officer of the court when I was a court reporter and never saw anybody whip out a Bible. No answers other than "I do". I never saw anyone make a BFD out of the God part, and I never did when I have taken oaths in court to testify myself.

As long as there's no Bible, IMHO, it's not worth hassling over.

Sort of like when people say they will pray for me, and I say "Thank you" and go on.

I will never, ever, ever go to Texas of my own accord. I've been there a couple of times because of work, but not by choice. Texas, for all practical purposes, is a theocracy. And any state that produced George (W.) Bush has nothing to be proud of.

I would definitely object to any attempt to make me swear an oath "under god." I have been asked to swear such an oath exactly once, and I refused. Didn't matter; they accepted my registration card, didn't have to swear anything.

Hey I have to live here, just imagine THAT. I live next to so much religious nonsense it's not even funny. There are 4 different churches within 5 minutes of me, 3 I can walk to.

Only in Houston do they call 84 degrees at this time of year a "cool front". Only in Houston do they call 94 degrees and 60% humidity a "beautiful weekend".

I intend living in North America in the not too distant future. Probably Canada (BC) but quite possibly the USA.

I can honestly say, that Texas is a state I will NOT go to.
