Default Beer and video games

<rant>
I've been wrapped in a cocoon, getting no work done (I work from home), playing Morrowind and avoiding people for the last few weeks. I even missed out on my II fix for a while. Didn't even lurk.

Then an old friend breezes in from the UK, just in time for the local German community's beerfest. I always thought drinking beer was the same as drinking water, or dog's piss maybe (I prefer spending a couple of hours finishing off four tots of Jack Daniels slooooowly), but evidently I was wrong - or German beer, like St Johns Wort, shouldn't be mixed with excessive sunlight.

Suffice to say I got slaughtered this weekend. Thankfully I wasn't alone. But what pissed me off is that said old friend didn't share my enthusiasm for simple camaraderie, instead of posturing machismo bull. We dated the same people and engaged in common or garden pissing contests in our youth but its almost a decade on and the stupid fuck still acts like we're teenagers and everything's a point-scoring exercise.

Naturally he's the star of the show, being the one who's jetted in for the week. No-one, myself included, begrudges him the opportunity to pontificate left, right and center the whole damn evening, but when I take him to task on one tiny point about economics I get nine yards of bullshit about "two ears, one mouth, listen twice as much as you speak" delivered with lofty disdain. Aaaaaargh.

Then he lurches through a singalong on guitar, is praised roundly by yours truly, but when I tentatively offer a little ditty I've composed talks all the way through and responds at the end by saying "nice guitar, was it a gift?"

To my business partner "You guys doing business together? Poor you, hahahaa". "Are you still single?". Parting advice "Fafs, you're never gonna get anywhere if you hang around this backwater" as if I haven't got anywhere already. Grrrrrrrr. I suppose I shouldn't let someone wind me up like this just because they haven't grown up, but he was a good friend, once.

Anyway, I don't expect anyone to care. I just needed to rant and IIDB is kind of my second home, when I'm not obsessed with something (like Morrowind). Thanks for listening.

well, farren,

have you considered killing him? or maybe just beating him up, that can be helpful,

in seriousness, I guess some people are just complete assholes.

Maybe the thing that sucks the most was that he used to be your friend?

I can understand that, when I have met people who I used to be friends with it never goes well, even when they arent jackasses.

Thanks for the support. Its funny, Beyelzu. In PD I had you pegged as the enemy. But the more I hang around this board the more I realise I resonate more with libertarian fuck-you nonthiest intellectuals than some of these posturing provincial neanderthals I grew up with in this forgotten corner of civilization. I suppose I'd have to, to enjoy Hunter S Thompson so much.

How's your exothermic companion?

(edited to add: Beating him up or killing him is not an option. I'm a computer nerd. He's an alpha male. Perhaps I'll hack his credit card or something. On second thoughts, they say the best revenge is to just have a good life)

Ugh, what a jerk, Farren! He was a friend is right. Not any fucking more, I hope. Alpha males are best taken with a large grain of salt, and hopefully a margarita. On a more comforting note, your former friend sounds like he has some serious issues with sharing the spotlight, and is going to have a miserable ife, with a trophy wife that cheats on him. I hope she drives him to bankruptcy. By the way, does he have a sports car? Making up for smaller things?
