From Brief History of Time:, page 62 of the 1996 Illustrated Version (I'm so lucky )

Quote:
Correspondingly, if, as is the case, we know only what has happened since the big bang, we could not determined what happened beforehand. As far as we are concerned, events before teh big bang can have no consequences, so they should not form part of a scientific model of the universe. We should therefore cut them out of the model and say that time had a beginning at the big bang
The section before (for the correspondingly to make sense) is about the big bang being a singularity--where all laws break down--so we could not determine anything about the time of the big bang.

It appears as if this man cannot read the article, by the way. IT mentions a few people who were in favor of the Steady State model (namely Einstein), but never mentions (to the little I have read) Hawking as having such a belief. His error is the factual one.

For the article:

I haven't the time to read it until Tuesday, but it is filled with shit arguments (like the First Cause, which fails because God must therefore have one and so forth...), the anthropic principle, etc. He also claims that brief history makes the case for an intelligent designer. This is bullshit, and the author is either deliberately blind or stupid--I vote for the former. He makes NO CASE for god whatsoever--in his view, it is not the job for science to consider God. He mentions God several times, but not in the sense that would be required for this to be the case. They are mostly in the "one can imagine" type cases.

Which board was this on, btw? I want to give this shithead a kicking he will never forget.

i think i will respond with your answer to the article if you dont mind?

I already proved that he is DEAD WRONG about the hawkman...i have a quote from a lecture of hawking where he says "The conclusion of this lecture is that the universe has not existed forever. Rather, the universe, and time itself, had a beginning in the Big Bang, about 15 billion years ago. ".

anyway, dont bother reading the article. its long, doesnt have footnotes, and he only used it b/c the entire crux of his argument is based on hawking thinking the universe didnt have a beginning...too bad he is wrong.

go ahead and use it--I have no problems. I'll register at some time tomorrow there, and lurk around for him. I like blowing people out of the water occaisionally. It's more fun when they don't see it coming.
