Bonobos seem to found their whole social organisation on recreational sex of all sorts. Make love, not war! etc.

What I don't understand is why god made sex pleasurable if he didn't want us to do it except for procreation. After all, since he told us to increase and multiply, we would surely do it often enough to produce children, even if we hated it. Since we are not supposed to commit fornication or adultery, why are we cursed with this constant urge?

BTW, the immorality of recreational sex can be a very serious issue indeed. In Nigeria, yet another pregnant woman is under sentence of death (by stoning) for unlawful intercourse. Ah! Allah the Merciful!

I think this guy needs to get laid...
Believe it or not, in the Marine Corps, there is a rumor that there is a published order that states the only sexual position allowed for a Marine is the 'missionary position'. If this is true...OUCH! I'm in big trouble.

...Missionary Position : Impossible

I am always flabbergasted that people with these insane views are walking around, have jobs and interact with others. This guy may work at your bank or serve your dinner...scary

Here's the thing I have with this... if one looks at all the odd, dildonic devices nature has come up with, one finds that there is really no seperation between reproduction and recreation. Hell, sex is pleasurable so people will want to have it. If you have sexually frusterated creatures running around, they arn't going to want to do it all that much and they won't reproduce. On the contrary, I'd argue that it is unnatural to strip sex of all its pleasure and do it simply for procreation.

Speaking of dildo like contraptions, what exactly is that thing that old Nebuchadnezzar built on the plain of Dura? Ever read the measurements and description (widthxheight, etc.)?

Looks to me like a giant gold tipped vibrator!

Use your imagination on that folks. And it sits right in the center of the holy book. Use your imagination on what that's used for...

I should probably stop before I really offend people.

This guy does not represent the standard Christian attitude toward sex (if he was using the same definition of “recreational sex“ that you gave), nor are his ideas Biblical (see Proverbs 5: 18-19, I Corinthians 7:3-5, the entire book of Song of Solomon for crying out loud!). It is true that, according to Christian morals, sex should be restricted to marriage, but there is nothing wrong with engaging in sexual activity for the sake of pleasure alone within the context of marriage. God created sex for pleasure as well as for procreation.

Kenny

Question

Kenny, but I understand that strict Catholicism doesn't allow for sex for pleasure in any way. Sex is strictly for procreation only.

Do you know why the difference if it is based on the same scripture? Maybe also dk (a Catholic) might be able to shed some light on this.

Actually, my understanding, at least from what I read in the Catholic Catechism is that this is not true. If it were, then why would the Catholic Church endorse natural family planning methods? My understanding of Catholic doctrine is that they believe that sex is intended for both procreation, pleasure, as well as the development of intimacy. The reason Catholics oppose birth control is simply because they believe that it is distorting of the meaning of sex to allow for some of its aspects but exclude others.I’m not Catholic and I could be wrong here.

As a protestant, I have no moral qualms concerning the use of birth control (although some protestants do).

God Bless,
Kenny

I am no longer Catholic (nor even a theist, for that matter), but that is about as good a summary as I have heard. Reviewing The Catechism, that is about the meaning one gets.

Furthermore, my wife and I both took natural family planning classes at the local Catholic Church - great classes, great technique (especially if you desire children). The idea being that sexual pleasure in sanctified union builds the intimacy and giving necessary to enter God's kingdom.

If anyone does not know what the Catechism is, it is the stated belief and moral code of the Catholic Church. According to Catholocism, it supersedes any biblical interpretation, being the direct interpretation of all of God's revelations directly to his "chosen vessell" The Church. If you are a Catholic, you do not read the bible - you read the Catechism.

It is required study for all Catholics before Confirmation. Catholocism is the largest organized body of Christianity in the world.

Disclaimer: I am not saying any of this to promote Catholocism (which I do not), just to express what the Catholic viewpoint is as a former member. I am an atheist now, as is my wife, and we are raising our children as atheists as well.
