From the Bible:

Exodus 22:18 Thou shalt not suffer a witch to live.
22:20 He that sacrificeth unto [any] god, save unto the LORD only, he shall be utterly destroyed.

And in the words of Jesus, from Luke:

26 For I say unto you, That unto every one which hath shall be given; and from him that hath not, even that he hath shall be taken away from him.
27 But those mine enemies, which would not that I should reign over them, bring hither, and slay them before me.

This is somewhat similar to the situation in England and Wales, although as far as I remember, the last time there was a prosecution for blasphemy it resulted in the editor of some publication (I think it may have been Gay News) being sentenced to prison.

The harm of countries like Ireland and Britain not expunging their blasphemy laws is that the islamists, with their capital blasphemy laws, always point to them and say, "Well you have laws against blasphemy, why shoudn't we?"

I think it's very important to campaign for the removal of all blasphemy laws on the grounds that they contravene human rights.

Oh, I agree completely. Too bad we can't convice certain people that if it weren't for concepts such as "blasphemy", self-described "artists" wouldn't be able to pass of gratuitous insults of religious belief as original work. Couldn't we get the Church of England, as an example, to lobby for removal of "blasphemous libel" from the criminal code?

And more importantly, This was an interesting thread until some folks started feeding the troll!

WTF. Stalin didn't kill in the name of atheism. Hitler was a catholic, not many atheists are stupid enough to say that he killed 6 million jews in the name of God (generally atheists bring it up against the catholic church for not excommunicating him). Your analogy makes no sense.

Submitting this one to xians say the darndest things though....

Oh yes, these two people that you know over the internet represent EVERY SINGLE OTHER ATHEIST.

Just like every other Christian is JUST LIKE YOU, huh?

I beleive its dueteronomy 17 here that says something along the lines of if you find a nonbeleiver, take him outside the town and stone him to death? Off the top of my head, it might be 18 or something. Sounds like slaughter the infidels to me.

And its very relevant that they did it in the name of Christianity and stalin did not. It makes Christianity relevent to the deaths, but does not make atheism relevant to the deaths.

The point was, if you base all your generalizations of a group of people on things some of them did, then we should just consider all atheists as bad as Stalin, since he followed the same beliefs ( or lack thereof) that you do.

How do you know witches didn't actually cast real magic 3000 years ago? The Pharaoh's priests copied some of God's plagues in Exodus, so magic apparently existed. Witchcraft and Sorcery is from Satan, hence why 3000 years ago, it was a crime punishable by death. Witchcraft was pure evil. Since you didn't live 3000 years ago, how can you base the laws of the past on present day life? Do you believe the witches in Salem actually casted real spells and magic? You have absolutely no idea what life was like during Exodus, so stop making generalizations based on 3000 year old laws that don't necessarily apply to today.
How do you know that witchcraft and sorcery are from the alleged Satan other than allegations in the bible?
