Don't worry, the stray I Love Lucy radio broadcasts will reach them first. Attempted interpretations of the intelligence behind I Love Lucy will probably destroy any alien civilization, thus sparing us the humiliation that is Genesis.

Wink Six of one, half dozen of another...

Actually, if there are any aliens and they do happen to chance upon our little "MS in a bottle", the chances are that the finders will be some sort of scientists, in which case their reaction is likely to be: "Wouldn't you know it? They've got religion on their planet, too!"

Of course, they might also be fundamentalists; in which case we've probably initiatiated a galactic crusade.

"God? Who's this God guy? Hey, Rev. HHH7grooBn8#! These people worship some guy named 'God'!"

"What? Infidels! It is the will of Yui9fHH7% that they be destroyed! To the ships!"

Regards,

Bill Snedden

Should have put AOL incharge of its distribution. Aliens would really hate us since they would be getting dozens sent to their home.

Any civilization less advanced than us is probably not even in space yet, so the odds that this thing would just fall into their lap are pretty slim, to say the least. But that's interesting what you propose though... maybe someday wealthy religious nuts will send out spaceships preaching Christianity in hopes of converting aliens.

Any sentient entities with the ability to both recover and translate said disc will, in all likeliyhood, already have been made aware of the "idiosyncrasies" of the dominant hominoid species of the planet.

It always seemed to be a very bad idea to let aliens know where we are.

Since the purpose of the engravings to to preserve languages, excerpt from the Bible is a sensible pick. What other piece of literature is readily available in 1,000 tongues? Besides, the first three books are pure mythology, and not terribly bad as far as mythology goes. Let's face it, the book goes downhill from then on... had they picked something like gospels, or epistles of Paul instead of Genesis, that would have been a sickening idea.

We could be sending "The Best Hit's" of David Hasselhoff...
"Hot Shot City" is particularly good.
