Then what's the explanation for doublets?

Keep in mind I wouldn't argue against a post-exilic (or exilic) 'Deuteronomist'. But the simple explanation, from a literary perspective, is that the doublets and triplets reflect the text's strategy rather than its strata. Repetition and parallels in a unified narrative to emphasize a point were hot commodities in the ancient world (see R. Alter's The Art of Biblical Narrative, pp. 47–62; and T.L. Thompson, The Origin Tradition of Ancient Israel, p. 59).

Let me clarify a bit; what explains the contradictory doublets?

Any discussion about the apparently contradictory doublets must go case-by-case. I've just set the cat about the pigeons, that's all.

The simple fact is, the majority of form and tradition critics have not reached any sort of consensus. One begins to wonder if the methodology has not shown itself to be woefully inadequate …

Wow! Thank you Joel!

I have been waiting to see something good on the Documentary Hypothesis on the web for a long time now, and I don't have the knowledge to write it myself.

Thanks again.
