Still, most languages today are are alphabetic. People write with words, not pictures.

Smilies are symbols, just like letters, or more specifically idiograms. I only use smilies when they add to the meaning of my posts, never as a replacement for words that I would do better saying and never as a non sequitur! In the realm of irony, all is fair game though.
