Default More Abbott and Costello and the Bible

Hi "I Am Only An Egg,"

Abbott and Costello do have a funny Jonah and whale routine. It makes about as much sense as the Biblical Jonah tale. Here is the ending where God compares the killing of a gourd to the killing of 120 thousand people:

Quote:
7But God prepared a worm when the morning rose the next day, and it smote the gourd that it withered.

8And it came to pass, when the sun did arise, that God prepared a vehement east wind; and the sun beat upon the head of Jonah, that he fainted, and wished in himself to die, and said, It is better for me to die than to live.

9And God said to Jonah, Doest thou well to be angry for the gourd? And he said, I do well to be angry, even unto death.

10Then said the LORD, Thou hast had pity on the gourd, for the which thou hast not laboured, neither madest it grow; which came up in a night, and perished in a night:

11And should not I spare Nineveh, that great city, wherein are more than sixscore thousand persons that cannot discern between their right hand and their left hand; and also much cattle?
God shows a bizarre and sophomoric sense of humor here. I guess you really had to be there to get the joke.

Warmly,

Philosopher Jay

It's sort of like a bad spin off of Who's On First.

God: "Who's on the cross?"
Jesus: "I am."
God: "No, you're me."
Jesus: "Yeah."
God: "But I'm not on the cross."
Jesus: "Right, I'm on the cross."
God: "Well, where's the Holy Ghost?"
Jesus: "He's on the cross."
God: "You said you're on the cross!"
Jesus: "I am."
God: "Why in My name are you on the cross?!"
Jesus: "That's right."

Song of Solomon 1
Beloved [a]
2 Let him kiss me with the kisses of his mouth—
for your love is more delightful than wine.
3 Pleasing is the fragrance of your perfumes;
your name is like perfume poured out.
No wonder the maidens love you!
4 Take me away with you—let us hurry!
Let the king bring me into his chambers.

Didn't Jesus say that he came as a drunkard? Or didn't Paul say that we are all prostitutes in this world?

Luke 7:33-5
For John the Baptist came neither eating bread nor drinking wine, and you say, 'He has a demon.'

The Son of Man came eating and drinking, and you say, 'Here is a glutton and a drunkard, a friend of tax collectors and "sinners."'

But wisdom is proved right by all her children."

I don't know anything about prostitutes in Paul.

I think he is thinking about the Exegesis on the Soul (Nag Hammadi)

Quote:
But as to this prostitution, the apostles of the savior commanded (Acts 15:20, 29; 21:25; 1Th 4:3; 1 Co 6:18; 2 Co 7:1): "Guard yourselves against it, purify yourselves from it," speaking not just of the prostitution of the body but especially that of the soul. For this reason the apostles write to the churches of God, that such prostitution might not occur among us.

Yet the greatest struggle has to do with the prostitution of the soul. From it arises the prostitution of the body as well. Therefore Paul, writing to the Corinthians (1Co 5:9-10), said, "I wrote you in the letter, 'Do not associate with prostitutes,' not at all (meaning) the prostitutes of this world or the greedy or the thieves or the idolaters, since then you would have to go out from the world." - here it is speaking spiritually - "For our struggle is not against flesh and blood - as he said (Ep 6:12) - but against the world rulers of this darkness and the spirits of wickedness."
