Default Priest Ordered to Prove that a Historical Jesus Existed

This post was merged with an existing thread.

After ID got thoroughly stumped in court, the Historical Jesus is in trouble in court too. This time, instead of parents of public schoolchildren, it is Signor Cascioli, author of The Fable of Christ, who is suing the Church.
The charges against the Church are "abuse of popular credulity and “impersonation, which are both offences under the Italian penal code.

Quote:
AN ITALIAN judge has ordered a priest to appear in court this month to prove that Jesus Christ existed.

The case against Father Enrico Righi has been brought in the town of Viterbo, north of Rome, by Luigi Cascioli, a retired agronomist who once studied for the priesthood but later became a militant atheist.

Signor Cascioli, author of a book called The Fable of Christ, began legal proceedings against Father Righi three years ago after the priest denounced Signor Cascioli in the parish newsletter for questioning Christ’s historical existence.

Yesterday Gaetano Mautone, a judge in Viterbo, set a preliminary hearing for the end of this month and ordered Father Righi to appear. The judge had earlier refused to take up the case, but was overruled last month by the Court of Appeal, which agreed that Signor Cascioli had a reasonable case for his accusation that Father Righi was “abusing popular credulity.

I heard Trudeau and Benny Hinn have collaborated and are now selling a new anti-Satan cream.

This is a really terrible and stupid lawsuit on the part of Cascioli. I would hope that he would do the right thing and dismiss, maybe on condition that the case be decided in a University debating forum or some such thing.

This kind of thing only re-inforces the persecution complex of men like Pat Robertson and Jerry Falwell. It is absolutely stupid.

It also makes freethinkers everywhere look bad - as if we are out to attack religious belief. I think most thinkers don't really care what others believe. If they want to follow L. Ron Hubbard that's their moronic problem. If it makes them feel better, fine. I could really care less.

What concerns me is when they use things like this to "rally the troops" to "take back our schools" and "take back our government." That is where any religious movement, including atheism, must be stopped.

There is the old atheism-is-a-religion nonsense implication again.

There isn't anything wrong with challenging people to justify their beliefs.

The likes of Jerry Fallwell do not need episodes like this to reinforce their persecution complexes and we shouldn't be hiding in the shadows just so 'Ole Jerry doesn't get upset.

A couple of minutes ago they talked about this trial on the (Dutch) radiostation I listen to.

A co-DJ represented himself as an authority and stated that outside the bible there was only one Jewish writer who mentioned Christ, according to him Jesus was also a widespread name like John or Mohammed nowadays, he did say also that the priest would have a hard time proving the existence of HJ.

The trail was ofcourse an atheistic event, and he also emphatically stated that atheism was a belief too.

Asked about his own beliefs, he answered that he did believe in some sort of creator "what do you call it, uuh, Intelligent Design, and ofcourse I also believe in evolution".

I was so irritated about all the mistakes, or better blunders he made in a couple of minutes. Isn't it the worst thing if people who picked up some pieces of information here and there, than act like they know it all and present themselves as an authority.

I send an e-mail to the radiostation addressing him on his errors and referred him to www.iidb.org for more information.

We need all our voices, SLD. We need the militants and those willing to do crazy things. We need the conciliatory and the quiet, the tolerant and the strident. We need them all. Different people have to be reached in different ways.

I say that stupidity is a pollutant just as much as petroleum emissions are. We need more attacks on the idiotic everywhere we go. We can let them be stupid, but we don't have to let them think they're smart.
