Hi Dave

I think you are agreeing with me, not disagreeing.

Details, details (imagine my hand waving in a dismissive manner, so as to conform to the norms of this board) ... Now place here a long reactionary knee jerk invective in defence of my mis-statement so as to save face.

Seriously though, I should have worded it differently.

I couldn't quite agree with your paraphrase "people who only care about bodily pleasures are bound in a death grip to their bodies in the same way that crucified people are bound in a death grip to their crosses." It seemed to be missing the point that there is a degree of correspondence between the soul that inhabits a body and the body itself.

So, I shall re-write my original statement (although steadfastly maintain that I never did, again to conform to forum norms) as:
"I think, along with Andrew, that this is a literal use of "crucified," not figurative. But I take issue with his paraphrase, and think the message being conveyed is rather:

Philo observes that the bodies of souls that love the body reflect that disposition by admiring external good things exceedingly, similar to the way that the body of brigands, who are attached (in their affections) to corruptible matter, end up as corrupted matter strung out on an executioner's cross.
