I didn't admire Paul, and doubted his prophethood, even when I was a Christian. I just always thought he was a huckster.

There is one positive thing you can say about Paul. He expected men and women to follow the same standards for sexual morality. The typical morality of his day was that proper women were expected to only have sex with their husband while their husbands could screw around all they wanted to. I'm not saying that Paul's standards were realistic, but at least he was trying to be equitable.
