Dave,
Your joking right? Well of course you are.

Do you understand why volcanism is primary evidence to cross correllate lake varves, ice cores, dendrochronology and C14 dating?

Do you need me to explain, not analgyse but actually explain, why this is so?

Dave?

It's more then pure linguistic confusion, God CONFOUNDED all the people at that time. How else can you account for the missing evidence of the tower, the flood, the dates, and every other confliction in the bible. Have you ever been confounded before? in order to understand the scale of Gods confoundations you have to multiply that times infinity. On that kind of scale a two mile thick sediment layer will just disapear, calibration curves will bend like grass in the wind, and billions of years of evolution will happen in a blink of the eye.

It's all justified within the verses 1-9 Genesis 11.

Calilasseia: I appreicaite the detailed debunking above and i agree that said evidence doesn't exist for the Tower, that is of course what you would expect had confoundation happened. Dave's narrow YEC view could probably come up with counterpoints (he certainy can state his case better then I), however it's as useless as cud when faced with absolute confoundation.

That's almost an elegant argument- God has arranged things so that Biblical literalism makes no sense

Sadly for you it falls over in at least three places that I can see:

1) verses 7 and 9 both say specifically, confound their language. Your "confound everything" interpretation is in the same class as the YEC "galloping continents"- you wind up trying to justify scripture by claiming things that scripture doesn't say.

2) if the objective was that people would be unable to understand each other it has clearly failed since people do in fact succeed in understanding each other.

3) if everything was supposed to be utterly confused, then it should be impossible to come up with a coherent picture of world history. Since we in fact can form coherent pictures of world history (just, not Biblical ones), clearly things are not as confused as they could be

I almost forgot-

4) Babel never happened.

I do give you credit, though, for coming up with a better argument than anything Dave has produced in about two years. I'm pretty sure you're pulling our legs anyway

Is your god really this insecure, BT? Humans built a tall building, and he got so scared they'd actually manage to get into heaven (how far up is heaven, anyway? A couple of thousand feet?), he tried, but failed, to completely screwed up their brains for a few years?

You know, considering the debacle in the Garden of Eden, a botched attempt to fix things with a planet-drowning flood, additional failed attempts at crowd control with the Tower of Babel, and then the completely failed experiment with the Passion, I'd have to say your god is a complete and utter fuck-up, who clearly was completely incompetent to try to create any kind of universe. No wonder the Kabbalists think he was insane. Maybe he was really brain-damaged.

(Actually, you're a parody, aren't you? Poe's law means I'll never be able to tell for sure unless you come out and admit it.)

(Trying again to awaken a conscience inside afdave) I see that you have posted recently, Mr. afdave. I wouldn't want you to forget your moral duty:

I am glad to see that you have decided to apologize for this earlier statement:

I am sure the actual "I'm sorry I said that. I was wrong." just slipped your mind temporarily. I'll keep reminding you that you actually need to say it.

[mom]It isn't an apology until you say sorry![/mom]
If you would like people to see you as a moral person, you should apologize for what you said. If you do not do so, the average person is going to think that your mom didn't raise you right.

SAWells, I'm glad you brought up verses 7 and 9, lets examine them closer and in Klingon:

Quote:
7. toH, macholjaj 'ej Holchaj mamISmoHmeH, yaj'eghlaHbe'meH (Translated by André Müller)
A direct online translation from http://translate.klingonreference.com will yield this:

toH, maclose in, get closer, come nearer (v)day (from dawn to dawn) (n) 'ej place (v)guage (n)torpedoes (n)j mabe confused, mixed up (v)be ugly (v)bridge (of a ship) (n), yaj'eghability (n)be'bridge (of a ship) (n)

Let me make a poke at what the original author may have been trying to illustrate here in normal english:

To get in closer this day and place, guage the confused, mixed up ugly torpedoes from the bridge of a ship.

The bridge of the ship is clearly Gods vantage point in the heavens. The confused and ugly torpedeos are a metaphor for the instrument he used to confound our language - but the meaning is clear - he intended for us to be confused in an ugly way... not your typical everyday confoundness.

See how confused langauge can literally confuse just about everything to the point where you might just have "galloping continents"?

Hmm…using Klingon to argue that God is a deceiver.

I'm not sure even Poe's law can cover this situation.

Biblethumping, as soon as you made that post about enjoying reading and strictly following the Leviticus codes I knew you were taking the piss, Poe's Law or no Poe's Law. Being a bit of a stirrer myself I can spot them sometimes.
In tried to tell Calilasseia last night by PM but he still thought you might be for real.
