Vatican holds off
Quote:
For its part, the Roman Catholic church says the matter requires more study. The Vatican's Pontifical Commission of Sacred Archaeology said tests to gauge the age of the bones and other factors would have to be weighed before it could judge their provenance.
Bulgarian Church is not so cautious
Quote:
The Catholic church says the bones should be studied before their authenticity can be verified. The Bulgarian Orthodox church, however, argues that “heavenly secrets should not be revealed by the means of man.” On August 5th the bones were solemnly transported to a Sozopol church and sealed in a silver reliquary donated by the prime minister. There are no plans for tests.
But now the "Diaspora Minister" is doing his part to increase tourism by attacking Bulgarian women for visiting the relics in revealing clothes.

Quote:
After the widely publicized discovery of the alleged relics of St. John the Baptist in Sozopol last week, the Diaspora Minister, who is also in charge of state policies on religions in Bulgaria, got into a conflict with leading archaeologists who felt insulted by his rebuttal of their criticism of the sensational nature of the find.

Speaking on Monday, he declined to apologize for his words directed against “envious archaeologists” and went even further with his controversial remarks by slamming the lack of religious culture among Bulgarians, and especially among the Bulgarian women, who he says enter churches almost naked.

“The Bulgarian women go to church in very revealing clothes, with only their nipples covered; compare them with the Russian women, of whom even the lowliest whore would put a headscarf on, and then enter a church,” Dimitrov commented at the end of last week.

Does routine trash like this go on anywhere else in archaeology, or is this something specific to Biblical archaeology? Particularly?

Are there any photos of the lowliest whores and the Bulgarian women attending church? Enquiring minds want to see.
