Default History Channel 10 part miniseries on The Bible

Time Mag is a bit snarky

Quote:
The History channel, as we all know, puts a premium on the veracity and historical truth of its projects. That was the ostensible reason, for instance, that the channel rejected the miniseries The Kennedys, saying that the political story did not meet its standards of accuracy.

Now History has a new project: Survivor producer Mark Burnett will make a 10-hour miniseries adaption of The Bible. Yes, that Bible. The one with people rising from the dead and turning into salt and the story of the guy who built a boat to save the creatures of the Earth from a global flood.

The latter, at least, is one of the Bible stories that Burnett will dramatize in the scripted series. So it's a relief to have the whole literal-truth-of-the-Bible thing sorted out!

Actually, the statements made by History channel executives skirt the issue of whether or not the events recounted in the Bible are history; the argument, apparently, is that the existence of the Bible's stories is itself history. "We spend a lot of time talking about this book, and probably not enough time knowing what's in it," History president Nancy Dubuc told the Hollywood Reporter. "One of the most important things about history is knowing the stories of history."
NY Times: Next for ‘Survivor’ Producer: Bible-Based Scripted Drama

Quote:
. . . Nancy Dubuc, the president of History, said the historical importance of the Bible is beyond dispute.

“This is the most discussed, debated book in the history of mankind,” said Ms. Dubuc, whose channel has tackled other religious projects, like “Jesus: The Lost 40 Days” and “The Real Face of Jesus?”

. . .

The Bible has its own layers of interpretation, of course, but Ms. Dubuc said the series would not try to impose any kind of historical context to events like the Flood. “It is just the magnitude of the book itself,” she said. “We’re not stepping back to examine anything that could be called a controversy. We are just telling the stories that are in it.”

Ms. Dubuc said researchers are already at work and theologians will be consulted.
Because any history project needs theological vetting?

Oxymoron channel?

Of course it could be worst. A Survivor type series with HJers and JMers.

I suspect that theologian Jim West will not be consulted.

Oh No, The History Channel is Planning a 10 Part Series on The Bible

AP News

Quote:
The series will combine live action with computer-generated imagery to retell stories ranging from Noah and the Ark to Exodus to the crucifixion and resurrection of Jesus. Shooting is planned for the Middle East and elsewhere.

Burnett said he and Downey (who starred in a different look at faith, the fantasy series "Touched by an Angel") have been working on the project for two years. Both grew up with Scriptures, he in England and she in Northern Ireland, but aren't on a mission, Burnett said.

"People apply personal meanings to the Bible. Our job is to tell the stories in an emotionally connected way," he said, adding that much of great literature and its characters are rooted in the book.

...

"The Bible" is using the New International Version, the translation preferred by evangelical Christian leaders, and the New Revised Standard Version, Dubuc said. A committee of theologians and scholars is being assembled to consult on the series.

They must have run out of things to say about Hitler and the Nazis.

Sounds rather like a "Bible Study" class. Critical analysis just gets in the way of a good bedtime story.

The History Channel should close up shop. Between Axe Men, Ice Road Truckers and the 5000th re-run of Modern Marvels it has become a travesty.

It's almost here

Mark Burnett unveils the Bible

Quote:
... "We've worked three years on this," Burnett said. "We love it. We believe in it. There's a responsibility to the world to bring fresh visual life into this, as you can see in the way we told the political story here of the pressure on Pilate, the pressure on Caiaphas."

Other scenes were action-packed, and Burnett said he hopes to reach viewers who aren't familiar with the Bible.

"It's the most important sacred text," Burnett said. "Without this Shakespeare wouldn't have existed, let alone 'Lord of the Rings' and 'Game of Thrones.' "

The clips had a gritty realism unlike many biblical epics, and Hans Zimmer ("The Dark Knight Rises") supplies the musical score.
