Just to clarify I was thinking of China, Korea, and Japan in particular (I guess the historically the sphere of strongest Chinese cultural influence), not all countries on the eastern end of Asia (i.e. Phillipines).

I do actually think that there is a small possibility for mass conversion. The Party spent a lot of time trying to get ride of all the old religions and replace them with radical Maoism. After the whole 'lost generation'-thing, they decided to replace Maoism with . . . nothing. These happened more in the cities than in the country-side. With the gradual opening of China, those in the cities are most likely to be exposed to Western culture, and thereby Christianity. Nature abhors a vacuum, so Christianity could rush-in to fill that. This could also be fueled by the white-washing/self-hatred that some Chinese feel when faced with the West.

But I don't see that terribly likely. First, I think that there is ultimately more national/ethnic/racial/whatever-you-want-to-call-it pride than there is self-hatred, so I don't think that that angle will win too many converts. Also, the government has been toying around with bringing back Daoist and Confucian elements. Also, Christians are definitely persecuted, especially Catholics. Granted, not as badly as some other groups, but watched. So why convert to an actively disliked religion?

So . . . my money is on 'no'.
