Some of them are probably stale - but I'm sure you can figure it out.

Robert Alter's and Richard Friedman's Torahs were decent enough, sometimes not shaky, but usually sound.

I was just going to recommend the translations of Robert Alter. He also has a translation of the Psalms out now as well. I haven't gotten that one yet, but plan to.

Here are the works of Alter:

What's your point?

If you don't like what is available, all you need to do is learn ancient Hebrew, Aramaic and Greek, and translate your own. Simple.

Right? [No, most anything updated or translated since the 80's includes this]

Most of them substitute “the LORD” for Yahweh.

Right? [So?]

Most of them substitute “God” for El and Elohim.

Right? ["El/Elohim" means "god"!]

Some of them substitute “angel” for messenger.

Right? ["Messenger" is withing the semantic range, but not the only meaning. Sometimes you just have to pick a word]

Some of them substitute “angel” for gods.

Right? [That is not true at all]

I think the overall point here is that many translations, in choosing the words they do, obfuscate the polytheistic and later henotheistic character of parts of the Hebrew Scriptures. These obfuscations are precisely what I'm interested in, so Loomis' comments are relevant to me (although not necessarily to anyone else).

At risk of moderating outside of my own fora , discussion of whether or not specific translations of specific words are appropriate or not are probably the topic of a separate thread.

regards,

NinJay
