Chanukah and Thanksgiving

Quote:
The reason Chanukah-before-Thanksgiving occurred in the past, and with decreasing frequency as time went on, is because there is a slow drift between the Hebrew Calendar and the secular (Gregorian) calendar. That drift amounts to one day every 217 years. So in about 80,000 years it will drift by one full year and we'll be back to where we started. At that time we will once again be lighting Chanukah candles at our Thanksgiving dinner.
There is no mechanism in Judaism to correct this (................

Erev tov partwayclosed! You invoked my name, v'He'nay! old Shesh is here at at your service.

I see that you have noticed that there is 'a defect in the traditional Jewish Calendar.' (-being most careful not to put any words in your mouth)
And I see that you are even beginning to learn how to do some simple addition and division! Wonderful! Marvelous! Excellent!

Now don't you go worrying your poor head about that there defective Jewish calendar.
The rabbis will perform a bit of their tinkering an have it runnin just as good as new for ya in no time.

But I do think you should know that old Shesh -never- attempts to calculate the time of the coming of ha'Moshiach.
That is one thing that is absolutely against his religion.
He does not know, nor does even he try to know. And even if he did know he would not reveal it.

Are there not twelve hours in the day? It is good that man a walk in the light while the light remains, lest he should stumble and fall in darkness.

Yom tov adoni.

Whatever posts are related to Hanukkah or Thanksgiving, I feel confident in saying that no one should be afraid of the gospel. It's just a fictional story, and not even very scary.

Somehow I feel responsible for confusing my English cousin but to quote A Serious Man in the famous Goy's teeth scene.

Quote:
Rabbi Nachtner: Sure! We all want the answer! But Hashem doesn't owe us the answer, Larry. Hashem doesn't owe us anything. The obligation runs the other way.
Larry Gopnik: Why does he make us feel the questions if he's not gonna give us any answers?
Rabbi Nachtner: He hasn't told me.
[Larry puts his face in his hands in despair]
Larry Gopnik: And... what happened to the goy?
Rabbi Nachtner: The goy? Who cares?
Goy's teeth story Part 3 from A Serious Man (2009)

Like I said having Hanukkah in November fucks up the parades and the various menorah lighting ceremonies, etc.

Just to add insight to the XMas thing we could look at the holiday in Japan.

A Merrier Christmas

Quote:
Spend any time in Japan these days, and you can’t help but notice: This country may be less than 1 percent Christian, but it’s 100 percent Christmas. Hearing the carols blaring from sidewalk loudspeakers in this overwhelmingly Buddhist and Shinto country, you wonder, how did Japan buy into such a foreign tradition?
Xmas is much better in every way without the religious connotations.

Of course when I made the OP, comments along these lines were the furthest thing from my mind. I had simply never heard of the calendar issue before and thought it worth mentioning.

But Judaism is fact?
