"Thou art the Christ, the Son of the living God."
Is that Rock upon which The true Church would be built.

In other words 'whosoever' (in its due time) made this confession would be accepted.
Calling upon his name, -Joel 2:32, Acts 2:21, Romans 10:13- assuring the salvation of ALL who believed, made this confession, and called upon his name. Smart or stupid, learned or ignorant, literate or illiterate. NONE would lose their reward, and being obedient to this call none would, or could ever be able to 'pluck them out of His hand'.
Joel 23:32 is a vow, a promise of a thing to be accomplished by YHWH.
Not by men, and not by the works of men, but by the keeping of, and the performance an unconditional vow made by YHWH and kept by YHWH.

As it is written; 'I have sworn by Myself, the word is gone out of My mouth in righteousness, and shall not return, That unto Me every knee shall bow, every tongue shall swear.'
'YHWH will be king over the whole earth. On that day there will be One YHWH, and His name the only name.'

The VOW and PROMISE is, that where man has failed, forgotten, or fallen short, YHWH will not, but will keep His vows, and perform His promises. And all men will come to bend their knees and confess His Holy Name with one accord.

BUt don't we go back to why the language in the interpolation isn't more specifically directed to Peter? And how does it sound in Greek?

"...you are Peter, and on *this* rock I will build my church....." as opposed to "....you are Peter, *the rock* upon whom I will build my church......"

I would like to rescucitate the discussion of this whole thread investigating the origin and use of the name Peter, Cephas the Orations to Constantine, Matthew, etc. I thought it was rather interesting......
