I hate to tell you this but it is really a slap in the face of non-Catholics by the pope to show that Dante's idea of Limbo has been degrated to hell proper. His reason for this would be that there are no good pagans left since they have all been zapped at least a time or two by marauding protestant evangelists and so have been left wounded for their transgressions. Be reminded here that we are about 500 years into the protestant era where eternal perdition instead of eternal bliss is what entails their Thousand Year Reign. Like you know, it is here on earth that we color our own heaven. So please tell me how Limbo can be a good place to be these days.

Here's the post of Roger Pearse to remind you what Limbo once was:

Quote:
No. In Dante's Inferno the first circle of hell is limbo, a pleasant place where the good pagans dwell, who did not know Christ but followed their own creeds faithfully.
All the best,

Roger Pearse

So why did anyone think it existed?

Yeah? Bet he can't cite chapter and verse to back it up, and God is unlikely to appear in person to clear up the issue.

There is no god. There'll be a female pope long before they acknowledge that detail.

Give it another few popes and the current one's hard-line conservatisim will probably have done enough damage that it will all be revelaed to be a hiedous misunderstanding, much like the witch-burnings that never really happened, no sir, the church would never revise the history books, they've been against witch burnings and believed in limbo forever.

God's alleged progresively revealed flip-flopping has its amusement value.

The average member of any religion is more concerned with the source of their next meal and a vague assurance that dead friends and family are in a happy place than with any of the other details such as selling all their property or killing the heretics next door instead of looking after each other's pets during holidays.

Therefore "limbo" offered a compromise between a conservative and brutal religion (dead babies go to hell, no exceptions) and the average person's compassion ("you're alive for thirty seconds then die and go to hell for all eternity? how's that fair?") and let them think that the unbaptised babies didn't get punished.

Anyone who thinks about it for 30 seconds would realise that the entire "random length of time alive (in random circumstances - not everyone gets an equal start in life) in which to earn eternity in heaven by 'choosing to accept' jesus and/or performing good works" is rediculous. But we're not talking about people who think - they took their comforting "babies aren't going to hell" and were happy with that.

That's a good question for the billions of Catholic. Maybe anything the Pope says is true.

I don't care what the Poopster say,
I wasn't goin' anyway
Gonna do the limbo rock
All around the limbo clock
Pope no limber, Pope no quick
Pope no believe no limbo schtick
All around the limbo clock
Hey, let's do the limbo rock

Limbo no be now
Limbo no be now
How doh can you go

Poopster got one big fancy hat
Poopster ain't no cool limbo cat
Limbo be gone limbo nooooo
Been sended back to de shadow
Pope no limber, Pope no quick
Pope no believe no limbo schtick
All around the limbo clock
Hey, let's do the limbo rock

Limbo be gone now
Limbo be gone now
Cuz Poop he say so

"Every limbo boy and girl
All around the limbo world
Gonna do the limbo rock
All around the limbo clock
Jack be limbo, Jack be quick
Jack go unda limbo stick
All around the limbo clock
Hey, let's do the limbo rock

Limbo lower now
Limbo lower now
How low can you go

First you spread your limbo feet
Then you move to limbo beat
Limbo ankolimboneee,
Bend back like a limbo tree
Jack be limbo, Jack be quick
Jack go unda limbo stick
All around the limbo clock
Hey, let's do the limbo rock

Limbo lower now
Limbo lower now
How low can you go

Get yourself a limbo girl
Give that chic a limbo whirl
There's a limbo moon above
You will fall in limbo love
Jack be limbo, Jack be quick
Jack go unda limbo stick
All around the limbo clock
Hey, let's do the limbo rock

Don't move that limbo bar
You'll be a limbo star
How low can you go
"

OOps, this ultra conservative pope just done away with the historical Jesus and now is telling us that limbo lost its special favor to non-Catholics.

Sounds to me like "MORAL RELATIVISM!"

Shouldn't this now mean that all unbaptized babies go to hell? I figured this would come into an abortion debate, claiming that all aborted babies go to hell, thus making abortion even more heinous.

I like how he says: "Unbaptized babies can go to heaven now, BUT YOU STILL NEED TO BAPTIZE YOUR BABIES ANYWAY!"

What a fucking joke. It's disgusting that this institution and person are respected....

What do you mean "even more" heinous? Sin is sin and from there all sins are alike.

Moral relativism is not a bad idea if you consider that the purpose of the law was to convict man of sin, for which a stream of consciousness is needed until then but only until then . . . or did you maybe think that there is such thing as sin in heaven even if heaven is a 'place on earth' (read state of mind here).

The only reason the Church is respected is because they have the evidence of truth and beauty on their side.

If religion is man-made (as it must be since there are no temples in heaven according to Rev.21:22), why do you think that it is any more than a game we play?
