The first part can be for mental adolescents who want to badmouth “Jesus” and “Xtians” all day, for militant Jews who want to encourage them, and for do-goody-good Christians who are on a mission from God to refute their arguments.

(This is more or less what you have now.)

And the second part can be for atheist bible enthusiasts who enjoy textural criticism - without interference from retards, missionaries, or trolls.

Sorry - you asked.

I don’t really agree with this. But I might agree anyhow just because the NT attracts all the menials with threads like, “Did Jesus Really Walk on Water?”

Is there enough traffic?

I would have thought, in my ignorant way, that the issues were sufficiently similar that similar people would comment. I suggest no change unless the number of threads merits it.

All the best,

It is now Biblical Criticism and History, and has been understood to include all of Christian history through the middle ages, as well as Jewish history related to the Jewish sacred texts. I believe that we have in the past assumed that the Qur'an would also be included. Non-Abrahamic religions are covered by NARP.

There has been some agitation for a Forum or sub-Forum devoted to Islam; as an alternative, it has been suggested that BCH should become ACH - Abrahamic Criticism and History. This doesn't sound quite right to my ear, but the alternatives all have some problem.

Please post your suggestions and reasons here.

Thank you.
I think it's extremely important to start examining the Quran closely and discussing it from a rationalist, humanist perspective. Christofascism is always a potential danger, but Islamofascism presents, here and now, a serious problem for the whole world, and since these people justify what they do by their reading of the Quran, we have to see to what extent their self-justification is justified or not, and what implications that has for our attitudes to them and to Muslims in general. (By "us" here I mean rationalists, humanists, and moderate, rational religionists of all stripes.)

I vote Religious Criticism and History, and broaden the remit. This would also have the added psychological value of putting all the religious myths and stories in one arena, a very graphic demonstration of the impartiality with which we view religious claims, and a denial of each religion's claim to exclusivity until they've all been tested.

Tis the 21st C, it began with a bang, and will end... at least warmer than now! I endorse the above sentiments.

Very few muslims appear willing to seriously examine the origins of their faith. I think that it is imperative that we do. Yet we should also seize the time, and the time is secular.

Leave it alone. It's fine the way it is.

I think either Religious Criticism or Abrahamic Text Criticism is best. It is more encompassing (in name) and it avoids making subforums to cover Judaism and Islam.

I agree with Roger. Let's leave it alone.

Thanks for the input. The admins and then the mods have discussed this change at length and we have decided to change the name. Up until this point there really hasn't been a place for scholarly discussion of the Quran and the Torah. We hope this change will help facilitate this. If the thread load dictates we may look at splitting up the forum in the future.

Comments can be added to my Announcement thread
