I'm curious. Do you give fundie Christians the same benefit of the doubt when it comes to matters of church/state separation?

Our feelings of compassion for the "poor suffering Muslims" (yeah, right) should not cause us to compromise the fundamental principles of a free, democratic, and secular society.

If you recognize the danger of, and vigorously oppose, even the smallest and most seemingly innocuous attempts of Christians to mix church and state, then you should react exactly the same way toward Muslim efforts to do so. That they are a minority (for now, anyway) does not matter. Compassion and tolerance and political correctness, while all worthy in themselves, can extend only so far. Someday Muslims could very well be a majority in Western nations. What will happen then, if they have not been taught a healthy appreciation of basic secular democratic principles--or if they are completely ignorant of these principles, having lived their entire lives under shari'a law?

And of course I would hate to think what is happening to some young Muslim children in general schools, if young parents (and it takes just one or two) express hatred or such comments.

Extremism is born out of ignorance and such popular panics fanned by the Media and petitioning before anyone has head their statements, in this case are reminiscent of pre war propaganda against Jews Gypsies, Jehovah's witnesses etc.

If anything Heathen Dawns comments just show how stupid the anti Muslim agenda is.

Indeed, there is, and also a function to report any post you may find inappropriate. The "report post" button (seen here: ), is located at the bottom left-hand corner of all posts.

Any further off-topic remarks will be removed. Please return this thread to the subject at hand, which I believe is the prospects of sharia courts in Canada.

Thank you,
the Leewit

The application of Sharia could not go against the law of the land - and the taking of human life is against said laws (we, unlike the US, do not even have the death penalty).

Isolated is the last word I would use to describe Muslims here in Canada. My high school, for instance, was over 20% Muslim - mixed right in with the rest of us. They did not form their own clique; they were just some of the guys and girls.

No, Mughal, not your politicans. You are not Canadian. They are not [iyour politicans. They do not represent you. They represent me, a Canadian, but not you.

Section 1 of the Charter applies to the rights in the Charter itself. The 'reasonable limits of Sharia' are irrelevant in respect to Section 1.

What? We do not a strong religious right in politics - certainly not like in the US. The closest we have is the Conservative party, which is neither fully united around a religious agenda nor the government-in-power. Christianity will probably not show up in public discusion about this at all.

You know, I hate to break it to everyone but this is Canadian domestic policy. It is our decision make. Our's. If you are not Canadian then you have no standing in the decision making process. Period. If you are Canadian then you do. Period.

This discussion is really about sovereignty: The sovereignty of a nation to decide upon its own laws and legal practices free from coercion from people outside that nation. We are a sovereign nation and a representative democracy. We will do what we feel is best for our citizens. If you don't like that, tough. Don't come here, then. No skin off our nose.

One of the biggest problems in the world nowadays is people thinking that everyone else's business is their own. In the old days that made you a gossip and a busybody. Not sure why that has changed. Stay in your backyard and I'll stay in mine.
