1700 hundred years ago today was a pleasant day in Africa where all our ancestors lived at the time.

(The thread title could stand some correction.)

They have certainly terrified many people today into talking such magnificent crapola.

History is the story of the wilfully blind, those who believe themselves ephemeral because helpless to be otherwise.

Nice, :notworthy: :notworthy: :notworthy: and did you notice that it is called the Catholic Church because none of them are Christians but just sinners as such?

So here now 1700 years later we still insist that Catholics are Christians because we think that they are just like us . . . but we are just better as saved-sinners and can talk bible without end.

I think that may well turn out to be the best received pop song I ever have or will Weird Aled for FRDB.

Note the Roman Catholic Church was used solely on the merit that fits the rhythm. 1700 doesn't, but whatcha gonna do?

Thanks for the smilees.

I think you will find he started the Orthodox church in New Rome!

And with all the calendar fiddling over the centuries, is it 1700 years?

The answer to that one will always depend upon whose 'calendar' it is that you are using.

I have good reason to believe that it really is latter than you think.

I am following Arnaldo Momigliano on the date 28 October 312.

See the original article.

There appears to be no shortage of miracles in the 4th century according to this ancient historian. But then Momigliano was being ironic as usual, wasn't he.

Did Charles Freeman publish a broken record?

His entire thesis may be summarised in a paragraph.

I have paraphrased Freeman's thesis for AD 381 (or via: amazon.co.uk) to express my view of what happened in 325 CE.

Freely paraphrasing Charles Freeman's 381AD for 325 CE

The historical reality that the emperor Constantine commissioned "the fabrication of the Christians/Chrestians" [1]
and organised the first churches including the appointment of its bishops disappeared from the record.

A harmonised version of what happened at (military operated) councils of Antioch and Nicaea
highlighting a consensus for which there is little historical evidence concealed the enforcement
of the pseudo-historical "plain and simple religion of the Christians/Chrestians" [2]
through the medium of imperial legislation and the religious inquisition of civilians.

The aim of the investigation is to reveal what has been concealed.

[1] Emperor Julian "Against the Chrestians/Christians"
[2] Ammianus Marcellinus "Res Gestae"

My view is that Jesus was not historical but a 4th century fiction which has been concealed.

Nice Pete, but why fiction if 'real' here is beyond the material that can be dated in history.

I still do not agree with the name Christian for Catholics because none of them are, never were and actaully cannot be. My reason for this is that Catholic churches are for sinners and for sinners only. They would so belong to the Church Millitant where they listen to the shepherd and [kind of] do what he tells them to do.

What may be classified as Christians would be their saved-sinners in purgatory that they call the Church Sufferering. Catholics pray for these that they may find a timely release and enter heaven where they will belong to the Church Triumphant as saints. Neither of these attend regular church and are not welcome there either.
