It is unlikely that the quote in Mark 1:7 is an interpolation--Matthew and Luke both sourced it--instead, it is likely to be original to the author himself (or the spoken legend). That doesn't mean John the Baptist really said. It is likely to be an invention of Christians, judging from what they wanted to believe. Christians were rivals with the followers of John the Baptist.
