Yes, and we think that we are the sophisticated ones and those ancients the simplistic ones....:constern01:

Sorry but I thought it shows agreement with the OP. As for me, I would take this a lot futher and expain Jesus away as the purgatory stage of life and no more an no less.

Well if this is a derail I better make it look like one. So in this explanation religion ends where the gospels begin, which then was when Joseph [the wily] carpenter [sinner] was led [as if by the nose] to the state of mind he was at birth (there called Bethlehem) and while in that 'non-rational' state of mind he was born again and so became a new creation that they called Jesus. This Jesus is the image that bore Joseph's sin nature to Calvary which then was the cross on which Jesus died to set free the Christ image now without the human condition . . . who just happen to have a tomb in his back yard that he had hewn out of solid rock with his own hands. Of course he did and spend 46 years carving it into the perfect match for himself.

Purgatory is the period between rebirth where religion comes to a sudden stop and crucifixion is where purgatory come to a sudden stop if it does. If not, back to Galilea he goes which then is where purification continues until "[we] die nonetheless" as John put in 6:58.

I will add that my definition of sin is also little different in that it does not have that negative connotation about it (I hold that God loves a cheerful sinner), but that is just a minor detail among many others.

The Gosples are just an insighful description of metamorphosis that the mythmaker used to start a new religion to which humans can actually relate because we all share that same destiny and eventually will recognize our sin nature [wherein we are pretenders] as a liability and something that must be left behind. It actually gets better if John the Baptist is also this same Joseph to show the intuit determination to succeed and so is this John at the foot of the cross along with the triumphant mother of Christ (not Jesus) as shown in Masaccio's Holy Trinity event. http://pavlov.psyc.queensu.ca/~psyc382/mastrin.html

Enlightenment comes from crucifying the ego. The same message comes up everywhere, from Gilgamesh to Mohammed.

Most institutional religion is about people dodging the basic challenge imo. Arguing about purgatory or phylacteries or whatever is just distraction from the hard job of being a good person.

"Sin" is just an archaic word for hurting someone or yourself

Yes but if crucifixion is the crisis moment change comes about which can either render it a comedy or a tragedy. He therefore must die, the chief said, and since we are dealing with the human mind here the outcome is rather important, I would say, and is thus why the words heaven and hell are coined.

The Zen people talk about satori, the moment of insight. Before and after life goes on normally, but afterward the Buddhist now understands the meaning of it all.

The Taoists claim that those who truly "know" don't speak of it, while the ignorant can't shut up (Proverbs has a similar perspective). Talk is cheap, and God has heard it all.

Yes but the moment of insigt is just the beginning and I would say that afterwards the Buddhist is a Buddha and no longer a seeker as Budhdist.
