Default P 41 and Vulgate

hello

Are P 41 and Vulgate, my question if p41 date of the eighth century, that wants to say that the vulgate (4) does not contain what p41 contains? Does the Vulgate contain what exactly?

thank you all .

Hi Chimera,

P41 is a papyrus fragment with six verses from Acts.
This page lists the papyrus fragments -
http://www.kchanson.com/papyri.html

The Vulgate is the name given to the translation in Latin done around 400 AD. Mostly by Jerome. This is the NT and Tanach and you can see a more modern translation of the Vulgate in the Douay-Rheims, although it is not the original Vulgate. The earliest extant Vulgate manuscript is Fuldensis, dated to 546 AD (memory date).

Is it possible that the "Western" text indicated for P41 is similar to the Vulgate text for the six verses in terms of variants.

The verse often discussed for two textual variants ..

Acts 20:28 (KJB)
Take heed therefore unto yourselves, and to all the flock,
over the which the Holy Ghost hath made you overseers,
to feed the church of God,
which he hath purchased with his own blood.

Apparently P41 has the "the blood of his own.."
The Vulgate may be a mixed witness.

I wrote a short post on Acts 20:28 at

I'm pretty sure, yes. The Vulgate also included apocryphal works outside of the standard 66.

Chimaira, most welcome.

My understanding is that Jerome himself affirmed the '66 books'. He translated some apocryphal books (OT additions) quickly and with a clear written record that he did not consider them as scripture. The RCC at some point gave some books a deuterocanonical status.

I'm not sure how true that is. Jerome allegedly took issue with OT books which could not be found in Hebrew, but whether or not he considered them "canonical" may be unknown. I'm not particularly familiar with the Vulgate or its history, so you'd have to look it up to be sure. The NT canon was pretty much solidified by the fifth century.
