Am I the only one who was really let down by the end of the Da Vinci Code? The big revelation that Jesus and MM were married and had kids gave me the reaction of "OK ... and?" The whole conspiracy and coverup thing was kind of cool, but what they were covering up seemed kind of lame and useless to me.

And so will Christianity. Christianity is based on the divinity of Christ. Without divinity Christianity cannot exist.

Since the whole bible is about an useless God doing useless things and having an useless Son which ended up in a useless death, any fiction plot based on that book must have a useless purpose.

There are either 2 or 3 women named Mary in the NT. Mary mother of Jesus, Mary sister of Martha and Lazarus, and Mary Magdaline. I've seen the last two combined into the same woman, as in John's gospel it is explicitly Martha's sister who annoints Jesus' feet.

Also in John's gospel (and others, I think) there is a special disciple, "whom Jesus was loving," at the last supper, the crucifiction and later at the tomb. Thus, I think it likely that Jesus was involved with someone, just not Mary Magdaline.

In Hinduism, the gods are portrayed very much human with all the human strengths and weaknesses. So are the greek gods.

The idea of Jesus having a wife doesn't offend me. Mariage wouldn't detract from his perfection. I just don't see any reason to believe that he had a wife.

Whatever one believes about Jesus, he isn't typical. We shouldn't assume he was married just because a Jewish man of his time typically would be married.

As fiction it stunk about half way in, and as fact it stole from "Holy blood, holy grail" (even the name of that bok gives it away pretty much, Sangue Real - blood of kings, not San Greal - Holy Grail (pardon my spelling))from what I've heard (I'm about to read that - some day), but thought it had some good points. The one about Magdalena isn't new or far-fetched at all. I'm astouned that she isn't declared Jesus girlfriend in the christian sociaty (but than again I'm not).
Some assert that Mary Magdelene was the woman who sinned who washes Jesus' feet with her tears because this woman appears just before Mary Magdelene is introduced in Luke. However, the evidence for this connection is about as strong as the evidence Jesus married her: some people would like it to be so for one reason or another.

Sorry I wasn't clear. I didn't mean Mary Magdelene was thought not to have has sex, but that the Virgin Mary was thought to have remained a Virgin - even though she was married and married sex isn't a sin. So therefore, it's not that odd that some Christians would get all upset at the suggestion that Jesus wasn't a virgin.

The topic of the opening post and the responses to it are almost exclusively in the realm of Biblical Criticism & History. Anyone notice the name of one of the forums of this website in that sentence? Moving it there.
