For the nonspecialist, that would be Psalm 22.2, 1 Corinthians 13.13, and James 2.26. Good choices, Chris.

shall I give my first-born for my transgression, the fruit of my body for the sin of my soul?

He hath showed thee, O man, what is good; and what doth Jehovah require of thee, but to do justly, and to love kindness, and to walk humbly with thy God?

"Little children, it is the last time: and as ye have heard that antichrist shall come, even now are there many antichrists; whereby we know that it is the last time." -- 1 John 2:18

20. Wisdom crieth without; she uttereth her voice in the streets;

21. She crieth in the chief place of concourse, in the openings of the gates; in the city she uttereth her words, saying,

22. How long, ye simple ones, will ye love simplicity? and the scorners delight in their scorning, and fools hate knowledge?

23. Turn you at my reproof, behold, I will pour out my spirit unto you, I will make known my words unto you.

24. Because I have called, and ye refused; I have stretched out my hand, and no man regarded;

25. But ye have set at nought all my counsel, and would none of my reproof.

26. I also will laugh at your calamity; I will mock when your fear cometh;

27. When your fear cometh as desolation, and your destruction cometh as a whirlwind; when distress and anguish cometh upon you.

28. Then shall they call upon me, but I will not answer; they shall seek me early, but they shall not find me;

29. For that they hated knowledge...

30. They would none of my counsel; they despised all my reproof.

31. Therefore shall they eat of the fruit of their own way, and be filled with their own devices.

32. For the turning away of the simple shall slay them, and he prosperity of fools shall destroy them.

33. But whoso hearkeneth unto me shall dwell safely, and shall be quiet from fear of evil.

Proverbs 1

Isn;t there a bit about 'wine that maketh glad the heart of man'?

I hope it's verbatim, but can't guarantee it (at this time of night).

David B (finds that his sort of biblical bit)

The Bible is a historical and literary document. Surely, though, it has some beautiful and true ideas that its writers did happen upon. I'm wondering which of these struck you the most.

i am going to guess that you meant John 3:16 rather than John 3:14 (John 3:14 - New King James Version-
And as Moses lifted up the serpent in the wilderness, even so must the Son of Man be lifted up,
as opposed to John 3:16 (John 3:16 - New King James Version
- For God so loved the world that He gave His only begotten Son, that whoever believes in Him should not perish but have everlasting life)

thank you for starting this thread, i have enjoyed looking up the responses (for the most part) and can't wait to read more...

From somewhere in Ecclesiastes:

"I have seen the burden God has laid on men. He has set eternity in the hearts of men, but they cannot see what God has done from beginning to end."

"The truth shall set you free". Who doesn't believe that one? Who's so dull and uneducated not to feel immensely inspired by it?

The problem with fundamentalists is that they read "Truth™ shall set you free", instead of "The truth [whatever it shall be, beyond your pretentious wishes and preconceptions] shall set you free". I believe that's the idea behind Zen and certain psychotherapies, to knock you off of your self-centered and preconceived notions.

Truths that sharply contrast with your preconceptions really set you free. Change your views, experiment with new vantage points and you shall see how you and the world -every single thing- change completely. Things you thought were givens now seem contingent and relative, odious monsters become friends, and certain friends of old come to be seen rather as shackles.
