I've read christian apologists who say that this actually means don't eat kids (baby goats) who are still nursing from their mother. that sounds a bit more realistic than how it actually sounds translated.

Actually, the "ten commandments" of Exodus 20 weren't written on tablets at all, despite the legend and the courthouse displays. God doesn't give Moses the tablets until Exodus 24 and they have nothing to do with the commandments mentioned in chapter 20. Ironic in the face of the massive effort to hang the commandments in courthouses down there in the States!
