Well, on the positive side, looks like some interesting stuff is going to come from Tabor and MacDonald.

Really? Was Hoffman just plain lying when he said those papers would be in other books? I would doubt that, but if you say it is unlikely that those books were in planning....

The trick might be in the tenses: "As for James Tabor and others, their lectures were not available because they formed part of work already committed to publishers." Circumstances might've changed after the deadline.

A work may be contracted for and yet not published. In that case it will be owned by the publisher, unavailable to be published by anyone else and still not published if the market is not there.
